Technical Warm Up Switching Play (15 mins)

Set Up

  • Place three cones in a line each 10 yards apart from each other with a player on each cone.
  • A player on the side should start with the ball.
  • Player in the middle should start the sequence by backing away from the cone to receive the first pass (labelled 1 in diagram).
  • Player in the middle should receive the ball across their body and play out to the other side (labelled 2 in diagram).
  • The same pattern is then repeated from the opposite side (labelled 3 & 4 in diagram) so that the player in the middle receives the ball from both the left and the right side.
  • Players should try to take two touches.
  • Once the player in the middle has completed the sequence, rotate so that anew player goes into the middle.
  • Set up as many stations as needed.
Coaching Points/Guided Questions:
  • Receive across body with open stance.
  • Which foot is across your body when the ball is coming from the left? Your right foot
  • Which foot is across your body when the ball is coming from your right? Your left foot
  • Why are we practicing to pass the ball from one side to the other? To get better at moving the ball around an opponent so my team can go forward

4v4 (4 Gate Game) (20 mins)

Set up: Play 4v4 to two gates approximately four yards wide as shown in diagram. Use an area approximately 40 wide*30 long. Teams score by passing through the gate.

  • Progression 1 - team in possession can score by either playing 5 consecutive passes or passing through the gate
  • Progression 2 - team in possession can score by playing 5 passes or dribbling through the gate to score, they are no longer allowed to pass through the gate.

Coaching Points/Guided Discovery Questions:

  • How can you find a teammate? Look up while dribbling
  • What does good passing technique look like? Inside of foot, hips facing direction you want to pass, ankle locked, follow through towards intended target of pass
  • When might it be a good time to pass? When a teammate is open; when more than one defender goes to the person with the ball
  • When might be a good time to dribble? Whenever you have space
  • How do you want to try and receive whenever possible? Across your body
    • Why? so you can see both where the ball is coming from and where you want to go at the same time

6v6 (4 Gate Game) (25 mins)

Set up:

  • Using the Academy 7v7 field markings play a game of 6v6 from box to box utilizing the full width of the field as shown in the diagram.
  • There should be a gate approximately 8 yards wide (from sideline to a couple yards inside the box).
  • Teams score by dribbling through either of the two gates or making five consecutive passes without the other team touching the ball.
  • Players are now asked to play specific positions; center back (4/5), right/left(7/11), center mid (6/8), forward (9).
  • Progression- As players start to have more success switching the ball from one side of the field away from defenders remove the gates and add goalkeepers to play a regular 7v7 game.
