Step 1

Essence:

- To work on tracking back to either contest or win the ball.

Structure:

- Player A passes the ball to B. B carries the ball and aims to score.

- After A passes the ball s(he) has to run through the cones before they can tackle back.

- If A wins back the ball they can then get a shot of (this way the keeper is constantly involved)

Technical points:

- Its important that B accelerates and looks to eliminate the run from A before they can become a threat.

- A has to work hard and sprint to get into position to either make a tackle or contest the shot.

Step 2

Same principle as previous step.

- Only difference is we add another defender C.

- C is there to slow B down so that A can get back and create a 2v1 to make the tackle

- Ask the players about what the attacker could do under pressure here from 1 or two players to get an outcome

Step 3

Builds upon the aspect of dealing with pressure as a forward from the previous exercise.

- The player in the middle on the green cone shouts go.

- Both players on the white cone have to run to red>white>yellow>white>blue>white and then receive the ball from the player in the middle.

- While this happens the defenders (in blue) need to run around both the white cones before they can be active

- The players who are running from cone to cone. Emphasise that when they run they are in a low position with their left hand as close to the ground as possible. Get them to imagine that at every cone is a centre back looking to transfer the ball.

- Player on the green passes the ball and a 2v2 is played

- 5 sets for the defenders before you rotate them out.

- Once everyone has been a defender allow for a water break. Question them on pressure and how to eliminate it. Ask about if they get into a position where they have their back to the defender.

- Afterwards progress this into a 3v2 with the player on the green joining in the attack. s(he) can only receive the ball once they are past the 25 yard line.
