Specific practice: Breaking lines - 28 minutes
The aim of this session will be for the defenders to break the attacking press and okay to the midfield which will hopefully lead to a goal. Every ball will start with the goalkeeper of red team and will be played to a centre back. This is where constant movement from the midfield is needed to be an option. There will be different passage of plays practiced, different types of passes, and different options on the ball practiced.
If the opposition win the ball they need to score in the defenders goal within 7 seconds after gaining possession or the ball will be turned over.
Coaching point:
Positioning
Defenders finding centre midfielders - challenge, freeze, walkthrough, drive by - first block 6 minutes
Centre back finding full backs - target, walkthrough, concurrent - second block 6 minutes
Defensive midfielder dropping in as an extra centre back - challenge, drive by, fly by, concurrent - third block 6 minutes
Centre back trying to dribble out and find outlet breaking line pass
Using goalkeeper
Full back moving inside as an option - challenge, demo, walkthrough, concurrent - fourth block 6 minutes
Player specific
Goalkeeper - Play to either centre back to start play and stay in the middle of the goal ready to have the ball played to them in case it’s needed.
Centre backs - this position is important and I will be challenging these players a lot in this drill especially where to play the pass for what block I will coach. I will need these players to be confident on the ball and try to constantly be looking up and trying to find the midfielders.
Full backs - I want these players wide when the goalkeeper has the ball to be an option for the centre backs and can even make forward runs sometimes to try be an option. However, I will be challenging these players to come inside in midfield for a certain part of the session to try create an overload and have more options for the centre backs to find players and break lines.
Centre midfielders - I will need constant movement from these players to try and find space and runs for the centre back to drive in or find a pass. Try to get on the shoulder of the defender and find space to receive a pass.
Defensive midfielder - I will need the exact same as the centre midfielder role with constant movement and trying to find space however, during a certain block I would like for them to sit deeper to receive the ball and make an overload and this can free up space for the full back to receive the ball if they tuck inside or go high and wide.
Striker - I need these to try and constantly be an option for a long pass whether that is in the channel or by staying upfront and holding the ball up. Additionally I will need this player to score opportunities that come to them and try to score goals for their team.
Social corner:
Captains will keep score selected by me
Players will be encouraged to shout the player they are passing to and if every player does it and a goal is score it is double points.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
If defenders are having too much success I can put a limit to touches to help the attackers.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
7 second condition for the attackers to score once gaining possession
Can’t play past the flacks in wide areas. I have blocked this area as it would be where the wingers fo r the defensive red team and full backs for the attacking blue team would be.
Loads of challenges for players to play a certain direction, ‘can they move to this position to receive the ball’, etc.

After a 2 minute break from the drill the players go into a SSG
SSG: Breaking lines - 20 minutes
This will be a normal SSG with 3 touches maximum for the first 5 minutes to test the players and from there they will play with no conditions. The aim for both teams will be to score as many as they can and if they break a line with a pass then score they will get double points. Captains will take score to add to the social aspect.
Coaching points:
Direct passes
Wide players coming inside midfield to become passing options - challenge, drive by, concurrent - first block 4 minutes
Keeping an eye on technique if it needs coaching or tweaking for improvement
Using goalkeepers as an extra man for overloads to then find the forward breaking line pass - challenge, freeze, demo - second block 4 minutes
Social aspect:
The teams have a 2 minute break before the game to talk to their team and pick formations, positions, roles, motivate each other, etc. This encourages a match day type of atmosphere.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
3 touch maximum for 5 minutes in the drill but can be re introduced if the objectives aren’t being met.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenge players to find passes, to move positions, rotate etc
Need 5 passes before scoring a goal to once again encourage passes.
Double goals if a line breaking pass is done before scoring
If a passage of play shown earlier is played and scored from they gain 3 goals this encourages the players to practice what they learned in the specific practice.

Warm up - 10 minutes
Firstly, I let the players do a light jog around half the pitch. This is mainly so I can make sure my drill is set up correctly and make sure everything is in place while we wait for anyone who is late and it allows the players to have a quick talk and catch up prior to playing.
I will then try and split them into groups to do a rondo. I start off in groups of 4 or 5 with 1 in the middle. This player has to win the ball back and if 15 passes are made then one player will swap over with the defender so they all get an equal share. This happens for a majority of the warm up and for the last 2 minutes I have a big group rondo with every player and 3/4 players in the middle trying to win the ball back as soon as possible. Once again it is swapped over quickly however if a split pass in between players is played then the players have to stay in until they win the ball back and they a breaking line pass happens. Once everyone has defended at least once we go into the main drill in the session.
This warm up encourages quick passes and breaking lines. I believe it is a good starter with the main focus on breaking lines and will get the players doing the objective and in the mindset to try and find these passes before the main drill even begins.
All boxes are in a 6 yards square to keep it tight and then goes into a larger circle of around 12 yards from the furthest player with the big group to play and split lines.
