Description

OVERALL SYSTEM AND STLYE OF PLAY:

We have been playing so well recently pushing our opponents back on their heels and dictating play from the front. Let's keep up this style of play.

Play aggressive in the first 15 mins of each half, force mistakes in their half high up the field and be attack minded in possession. Emphasis on speed and athleticism in the opponents half to force turnovers.

OUT OF POSSESSION:  a high 1-4-3-3 but with a high, zonal press(front three keep their shape while pressing and midfield three fill holes/press opponents.

IN POSSESSION: a well drilled 1-4-2-3-1 with our midfielders offset to create more passing options than we normally have. Focus on getting the ball out to the wide areas and create combos, give n' go's, numerical advantage in those wide areas. Also want you to be aggressive in taking advantage of 1v1 situations in the attacking third, close to goal.

DEFENSIVE PHASE

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

OVERALL TECHNICAL THEME: DISCIPLINED, AGGRESSIVE PRESSING IN 15MIN OF EACH HALF

OVERALL TACTICAL THEME: FORCE THE OPPONENTS INTO TURNOVERS HIGH UP THE PITCH WITH SPEED AND COMPACTNESS. COUNTER PRESS WHEN WE LOSE POSSESSION

**OUR SHAPE WHEN WE DON'T HAVE THE BALL IS BASICALLY A 1-4-3-3

TOP PRIORITIES:

1) INDIVIDUAL DEFENDING - QUICK AND AGGRESSIVE AND STRONG IN THE TACKLE.

2) SMALL GROUP DEFENDING - GET COMPACT AND STAY COMPACT AS WE PRESS (HIGH LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

DEFENDERS

**- Stay connected with the midfielders as they press higher up the pitch.

Be SUPER PATIENT when defending in wide areas in 1v1 battles. Goal is to DELAY as long as possible

- #2 & #3 Be aware of overcommitting in isolation in the wide areas.

* DO NOT allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide! (Zone 14 - REMEMBER)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

 MIDFIELDERS

**DEFENSIVE SCANNING - to identify passing lanes to cut off. To see where defensive support is located

**Be strong in your tackling. Win 50/50 balls to allow us quick counter attacks

#7, #9 & #11 - Look for passing lanes to cut off into the center midfield areas. STAY CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. DEFEND EARLIER!! ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK.

REMEMBER WE ARE LOOKING TO BE AGGRESSIVE AND WIN THE BALL HIGH UP THE FIELD GIVING US LESS DISTANCE TO GET TO GOAL

**CLICK MOMENTS! 6 SECONDS AFTER TRANSITION, AGGRESSIVE PRESS AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!!

 - Critical that we apply pressure but recover centrally (DO NOT CHASE THE BALL HORIZONTALLY ACROSS THE PITCH!)

When we win the ball back, make the SIMPLE PASS!!! THIS IS SUPER CRITICAL - DON'T TRY TO BE TOO FANCY WHEN WE WIN THE BALL BACK. FIRST 1-2 PASSES SET US UP FOR SUCCESS OR CONSTANT DEFENSIVE PRESSURE

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ATTACKERS

#7 & #11 starting position when out of position is very narrow to make the center of the field congested.

#7, #11 & #9 - NEW RESPONSIBILITY TO CONNECT TO PREVENT OPPONENT HAVING TIME ON THE BALL AND EASY PATHS INTO MIDFIELD

If the #9 makes a decision to press hard from the front, all the attackers and midfielders must match the intensity to take away passing lanes and try to win the ball high up the field.

+++++

TRIGGERS FOR THE PRESS: BALL GOES NEGATIVE, PLAYER DRIBBLING BACK TO THEIR OWN GOAL, BAD SIDEWAYS PASS, MIS-CONTROLLED BALL/PLAYER WITH HIS HEAD DOWN.

ATTACKING PHASE

ATTACKING PLAY WHEN IN THE AREA OF THE FIELD WE CALL CLOSE TO GOAL (UP TO 35YDS AWAY FROM GOAL)

TECHNICAL PRIORITY: QUICK ONE-TOUCH COMBINATIONS!

PASS IN THE DIRECTION WE ARE FACING! UNLESS YOU HAVE CLEAR, OR COMMUNICATED TIME AND SPACE TO TURN WITH THE BALL

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ATTACKERS - WHEN WE WIN THE BALL HIGH UP THE FIELD, BE ATTACK MINDED AND GO TO GOAL. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SHOOT!

ESPECIALLY LOOK TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF 1V1 SITUATIONS!

1. SCANNING

  • Taking mental pictures as the game is going on
  • Where is the closest opponent?
  • Where is there a pocket of space to move into?
  • Where is my best placed teammate to pass to?
  • What can i observe about the game and where can I improve if i'm scanning the field regularly?

2. QUICK MOVEMENT

     -What comes first? the run or the pass?THE RUN gives visual cues to our teammates

     -How do we make sure our teammates are aware of our movement?(the speed/intention of the movement & communication)

      - What kind of movement is most likely to unbalance the defenders and create space behind the defense (angled runs at speed). Change of speed and change of direction!

      -When you make a pass horizontal, find a new opening vertically or away from the ball (rotation of other players into the space)

3. ACCURATE PASSING

      - don't sacrifice accuracy for speed of passing!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

MIDFIELDERS -

1. MINIMIZE UNFORCED ERRORS!

2. CAN WE RELEASE THE BALL QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY!

**Look for opportunities to get the ball out to the wide areas or up to our #9 in higher areas of the pitch!

** Focus is going to be VERY HEAVY on our technical improvement WHEN CLOSE TO GOAL WHEN TIME AND SPACE IS AT A MINIMUM:

1. SCANNING - See attacking above

  1. THE QUALITY OF OUR FIRST TOUCH?

      -can we recognize where the defensive pressure is coming from?

      - can we head in the direction we want to pass with our first touch?

      - Does our first touch set us up for the pass we want to make next?

      - Spatial awareness - do we know the space we have and how to use it effectively

** The QUALITY & DIRECTION of your first touch really sets the stage for maintaining possession.

  2. THE QUALITY OF OUR PASSING?

      - How accurate is our passing? do we play the ball to the correct foot of the receiving player?

       - Is the weight of the pass correct to either lead them into space or give them the best chance to get a quality first touch when receiving?

        - can we manage the balance between short accurate passing and longer range passing to switch the point of attack?

SET PIECES

ATTACKING:

What are we trying to achieve in different moments of the game?

KICK OFF: Go long to Quino, Ashwin or David on the wing.

FREE KICKS - We are trying new partners at free kicks close to goal! Austin and Ashwin (this is a one game change to see how they do!)

 - if we are inside 40yds from the goal - can we create an attacking moment by putting the ball in a dangerous area.

- if we are inside 25yds - can we take a good strike on goal ensuring that we make the GK work (DO NOT PUT THE BALL OVER THE BAR OR MISS THE GOAL ENTIRELY)

-if we are OUTSIDE 40 yds (or conditions do not allow a good ball into the box) WE POSSESS the ball (only exception, if we are losing and it is towards the end of the game - we might pump the ball in the box then) - DO NOT MAKE ME HAVE TO CALL ANYONE OUT ON THIS!!!

CORNER KICKS - Byron or Ben will take depending on who is in the game.

- let's try to mix up our corner kick repetoire!

Veg = All on the line.

PKs - Ben, Austin, Quino, Byron, Barbad(in that order depending on who is on the field).

DEFENDING SET PIECES

DEFEND IN THE 1ST PHASE, 2ND PHASE, 3RD PHASE AND BEYOND - DO NOT BE A BALL WATCHER AND LOSE TRACK OF YOUR OPPONENT!!

ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES - Our set pieces are a priority; make genuine efforts to win the ball first in defending situations.

DO NOT LET THE BALL BOUNCE!! Bouncing soccer balls in our defensive half/third will be absolutely destructive for us!

Recognize mismatches, recognize strongest players, shape of the wall (tallest players in the direct shooting line, etc, etc). Man to man on corners. High on the 18 yd line for free kicks (TRACK RUNNERS!!!!)

WIN THE PHYSICAL BATTLE!!!
