Organisation
- Half a pitch with boxes marked out with cones
- 16 players - 8 reds - 8 blues, can be reduced
- Play starts with 4 v 4 in middle square
- Either reds or blue intiate an attackk with one player breaking from the square supported by a team mate, looking to gain entry into the target box. Blues are playing to B targets and Reds to R targets.
- Opposing player iin the middle square, closest to the box being attacked, drops off to defend against the counter attack
- Defending delays the attack whilst team mate from the middle square recovers to get behind the ball to make a 2v2
- If recovering players gain possession they pass to either of their target players located in their target boxes to conclude the practice
- Practice starts with the players in the middle square - alternate players
- Players in the target boxes play 1v1 - oone is defending and one is attacking. To score the attacker needs to run the line over the back line. For the defender to score, they need to force the player out of the side or front of the box or regain possession and play back in to their team to score

Play starts...
Play starts with S1 or S2 with a pass in to the Blue attackers who attempt to score.
If Blues score or the ball goes out of play
- If Blues score or the ball goes out of play, play starts again with the opposite Server on the wing.
- If Blue's lose possession
- The Red team play the ball in to Red 1 who can only dribble in to the final third before passing to Red 3 or pass to Red 2 who can be any of the 4 red players in the defending third joining the attack.
- One Blue attacker / midfielder can make a recovery run in to the midfield zone stop the attack from Reds.
- If Red 1 passes to Red 2, the ball can then be passed in to Red 3 in the final third. The twoo Red and Blue midfielders can join this attack to create a 4-3 in favour of the Blues. Play comntinues until Reds either score, the ball goes out play or Blues win theball back. If Blues win it back they restart play by returning the ball out to S1 or S2 who work up and down the shaded channel.
What will dictate blue 1's approach?
- The direction of control / run from R1. For example, if it's a poor touch from R1, B1 might be able too win the ball back or make R1 play backwards.
- The run from R2
- Who makes the recovery run from the Blue attackers. For example, if a Blue is closer to R1 and tracks back quick enough, B1 may be best to cover and mark the run of R2.
- The position of Red 3 and cover behind. For example, when Reds can play direct to R3, B1 may be better blocking passes to R3.
- Communication from teammates.
So what does Blue 1 need from the player making the recover run?
- Quick response and recovery run
- Cover and compactness
- Good decision making
What does B1 need from his team mates?
- Recovery runs
- Communication - for example, the goalkeeper can see it all, is he best to deliver instructions?
- Compact and organised behind, to the side and in front
Principles of play
Transition - recognition of the situation, decision making, individual action, team and unit action
Out of Possession - Pressure? Delay deny, dictate
Challenges
Try to win the ball back and then play wide to set up attacks centrally
Retain the ball after winning possession
Recover as quick as you can
Defend two of the three grids in the middle third
Progression
Attacking team in final third - two touches
Play is continous when Blues win the ball back
Ball can be played direct to R3 from Reds winning possession
Two addition Reds can join the Reed attack
S1 or S2 can join the attack in the 18 yard box
Add an addition red to the shaded area to create two outlets
Blues must keep the ball for a target length of time before passes out to S1 or S2 or they have to complete X number of passes first. But keep realistic!
Conditions
R1 must remain in the shared area until he receives the ball

8v8 - this includes the GKs
Attacking team can overload the attacking third, however, this will leave them suspectable to a counter attack, so quick recovery and the playing with the principles of defending are vital.
2 players can join attacking third from midfield.
All principles of trasitional and out of possession are the focus when a team losses the ball high up the field.
Play restarts in the final third with a ball in from the coach to the attacking team.
