Description

Final Third position specific:

Working with the team in possession-

Working with a Midfield 1 and Front Forward 3 against a back Defensive 4 and a goalkeeper.

Working on half of the pitch, ball starts with the midfielder who plays to the forwards and attempts to score and be successful in the final third.

Players can go anywhere, no rules or restrictions, focus is just being successful and assertive in the final third.

If the defensive opposition win the ball back can they try and pass the ball back to a coach (assistant at half way line) next wave then starts again with the attackers.

Poles in place so the opposition have a set height held, kills the space for attackers to play in and makes it realistic.

Ball starting point at half way line for the midfielder to start the play.

Key coaching messages - Tactical & Technical information

  • Position specific drill. Set up as a 1-3. One Centre Mid and 3 forwards against a backline of 4.
  • Focus on the attacking team and how they can play with purpose to break down the opposition and be successful in the final third.
  • Playing directly from the midfielder straight into the striker, how can the striker be supported by the other players.
  • When the striker has the ball what is the movement like of the other forwards.
  • The distances for support and set back for the Centre mid to get the ball and to then play it out wide.
  • How can the attackers move the opposition, how to be smart footballers and create smart movement such as if the striker drops in who offers the height then.
  • When getting the ball to the attacking wide players, can they be positive in 1v1 situations and use the space to take players on and then deliver into the box.
  • The use of double movement to move the defender.
  • Protecting the ball as a striker, if pinned keep the ball away from the defender.

Organisation

  • Use of poles for the opposition to start their backline higher, create realism, kills space for the attackers to play in which would happen in a game. Adds the realism.
  •  Using half the pitch. Centre Mid starts with the ball in the shaded area which will be outlined with flats.
  • Balls starting point is just at the half way line.
  • Goalkeeper in the defending team. Bibs needed split teams into two.

Challenge

Time the players how long it takes them to get a shot off on goal if too easy. Limiting the time they have to play will make them play quicker naturally. The quicker they play the more effective they will be in the final third.
