Description

Objective: The session objective is for the players to gain a better understanding on when we should look to drop and get compact after the immediate press doesn't work. (winning possession back)

TTP - Win the ball back in 6 seconds, failure to win the ball look to drop and delay

Coaching points: Recognize when to drop back, get compact and become difficult to break down.

Who: #9,11,7,10

What: We’re looking to pressure the ball immediately after losing it in the attacking half to win possession back in 6 seconds. If we fail then drop and get compact behind the ball.

Where: Attacking half

When: If we don’t intercept possession after 6 seconds (The opponents are now spread out and organized)

Why: To prevent opponents easily moving up the field

Player actions: Players need to recognize when the opponents have settled in possession of the ball and at this moment (6 secs) look to drop off before they're spread out and finding the spaces in behind our unit.

Stage 1 (20 mins)

In this stage have the players attacking towards goal, due to the restricted space turnovers should be very frequent therefore repetitions of needing to initially pressure the ball should be frequent however we're looking for the blues to beat the press and score in the end zone via a dribble or pass into the target player.

The whites need to recognize when the press it beaten and the blues are more organized, it's at this moment we should look to drop and prevent the blues getting up the field.

Reward the blues with two points if they're able to score.

Progression: Increase the size of the activity

Stage 2 (30 mins)

Stage 2: (A-D) In this stage have the players looking to pressure the ball quickly when out of possession, looking to create panic in the opponents game and hopefully as a result turn possession over in the attacking half before they're able to spread out an utilize space going forward.

Game starts with whites attacking towards goal, this team have an under load to create turnovers in possession more regularly. Once the blues intercept the ball can we look pressure immediately and turn possession back over in 6 seconds before the blues can settle and spread out and play forward.

Failure to win possession back will result in us dropping off, getting compact and delaying the opponents breaking forward. - See in the diagram how we're dropping back to prevent the ball going inbehind, as a result we're forcing the blue team to build play up the field.

Set up - WHITE team (ST, RM, LM, CAM) BLUE team (GK, LB, RB, CDM, LM, RM)

• Whites attacking towards regular goal while the blues look to intercept and score in two wide mini goals.

Progression: Increase the depth of the field, this will give more space in behind therefore once we cannot win possession it's more important we drop to avoid this space being hit.

Stage 3 (20 mins)

In this stage we‘ll continue to look to pressure the ball immediately on turnovers, it’s important the closest player to the ball pressures immediately to prevent the opponents clearing the ball up field. By now the players should have a greater understanding of what to do once it’s been 6 seconds, once dropped can the team work out how to force play centrally successfully via their body shape.

If the player in possession of the ball takes a bad touch this might be a moment to pressure again however right now it's important we're dropping to prevent space being hit in behind.

In this set up players will need to pressure much more quickly with the addition of a third mini goal on the half way line. Failure to pressure the ball immediately will give the blues time to look up and hit passes into the attacking half of the field therefore once 6 seconds occur we need to drop and get organized, denying spaces in behind much quicker.

Set up - WHITE team (ST, RM, LM, CAM, CDM) BLUE team (GK, LB, RB, CB, CDM, LM, RM)

Progression: Add a target player for the blues to hit on the half way line which represents their striker, this will force the white players to recognize the importance of pressuring and/or dropping off at the right moments.

Stage 4 (20 mins)

In the final stage have the players scrimmage, depending on numbers have them play as close to 9v9 as possible. Make sure players are pressuring the ball immediately when losing possession however if we fail to regain possession after 6 seconds it’s crucial we drop, get organized and deny them finding space in behind.

See in the diagram how the whites are dropping once the blues have spread out and the ball is set back into the goalkeeper, players need to drop off immediately before space is exploiting in behind. Once we're organized, remain patient and see if the opponents are able to break us down. On heavy touches and bad passes look to pressure again to win possession.
