How Does Play Get There?

How Does Play Get There?

1. GK kicks long from dead ball.

2. Grey defence play into middle third.

3. Red team turn the ball over from own defensive third.

4. Red team turn the ball over in the middle third.

Session Organisation (30 mins)

Organisation

Attacking team - 6 players, front 3 and midfield 3. Try to score in the big goal.

Defending team - back 4 and midfield 4, plus a forward who starts on the end line. Try to score in the corner goals.

The Line of Press can be marked with flat discs, in line with the bottom of the centre circle or use the halfway line..

THE SERVER CAN SERVE TO ANY OF THE 3 MF PLAYERS AND ACTIONS WOULD ADJUST ACCORDINGLY

Start Point 1

The server (black) plays into 1 of the midfield 3.

When the MF player receives the ball, the Red striker becomes active.

Defensive Actions

9 recovers to a position between the MF players to try to prevent play being switched.

7 closes down as the ball travels from the server (curved line to prevent a forward pass).

8 also applies pressure to the receiver (and also tries to screen any forward pass).

6 and 11 narrow off and towards the opposition MF players.

2, 4, 3 all mark front 3 players BALL SIDE AND GOAL SIDE.

5 sits behind and communicates (also covers any ball over the top).

TRY TO CONDENSE PLAY INTO THE SHADED AREA

Pressing after givinng away the ball. (30 mins)

Start Point

GK or Back 4 play towards 9 but the MF 3 are allowed to intercept (9 becomes active on Grey touch).

Actions

All Reds push out with the ball out of defence.

6 and 8 press the ball.

9 presses from the "wrong" side.

7 and 11 come in from the flanks to cover the wide MF players.

2,3,4 all mark BALL SIDE AND GOAL SIDE.

5 covers the ball over the top.

TRY TO CONDENSE PLAY INTO THE SHADED AREA

Press in the defending third (30 mins)

Start Point

Grey CM plays a forward pass (must be 2 touch).

Reds become active on the second touch.

Actions

If the ball is played wide

7 or 11 immediately press the ball whilst preventing the forward pass (shape of run).

8 or 6 move wide to double up on the Grey wide player. Depending on the side the other CM moves centrally to screen the pass into the striker's feet.

2 or 3 mark the wide striker.

4 & 5 mark the other 2 strikers with the opposite side FB providing cover.

If the ball is played centrally

6 & 8 try to prevent the pass into the Grey forward line (if it helps the players to understand, you can allow the pass to go into the forward line initially)

4 & 5 go tight on the central striker.

2 & 3 mark the inside shoulders of the 2 wide strikers.

If the ball goes into the forward line, the Red MF players must press from the "wrong side" - if the ball is played back into the Grey MF, start to press as before.

Red 9 stays at the halfway line as a target player if the Reds win the ball back.

Reds should generally try to keep the ball on one side of the pitch.
