Play Phase - 3v2 Game (20 mins)

Play Phase.

Game begins with a 3v3 - When the ball has gone out of bounds, either dribbled or shot wide.  The player that missed must go towards the red cone and complete technical activity designated by the coach (5 juggles for example).  Whilst the player is completing the technical activity the other team counters to make a 3v2 overload.

If the ball goes out whilst the player is completing the isolated activity they swap over.

Coaching Points

  • How can we create space for the player on the ball?
  • Show me some runs you can make to drag defenders out of position?
  • Look to find a good 2v1 scenario.
Progressions
  • Make a time limit on the 3v2 to score.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Passing, Dribbling, crossing, shooting.
Technical Tactical
3v2 situation in the final 3rd.
Technical Physical
Strength on the ball, speed when attacking space.
Technical Psychological
Creating an attacking situation in an overload.

Animation 2

3v2 Wave activity.

See animation for how flow of exercise works.  Ball is played up to the 9.  Once the ball is played the 3v2 situation is live, the 9 shall play for the attacking team the whole time, so if they lose the ball they press straight away. Team in possession is looking to create a goal scoring opportunity quickly with the 3v2 overload.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage players to be creative in their 3v2 scenarios i.e. interchanging positions, attacking wide areas, centrally, but ultimately finding the end goal.
  • Play fast, we have this overload for a short time make sure the speed of play is there to create the goal scoring opportunity.
  • Vary your runs.

Progressions

  • Increase a time limit to ensure the speed of play is there
  • Introduce a second ball so the team attacking gets two chances to work on their overload.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
passing, building the attack before finding the 3v2
Technical Tactical
Recognizing as the ball travels into the 9 how we can support to attack the space.
Technical Physical
Runs off the ball, individual strength to maintain the ball to await support.

Game Situation

Play begins with a 6v2 possession Grid.  Team looks to make 3 passes before looking to pass into their target 9.  Once the ball travels into the 9, two players from the grid can leave to support the play to make is a 3v2 overload.

If the blues win the ball at any stage they are looking to score in the mini goals.

Play for 5 minutes then rotate the blues.

Coaching Points
  • During the build up can we maintain good supporting angles for the player on the ball, whilst attracting pressure but playing quickly.
  • As the ball travels to the 9 can we make supporting runs to drag the two defenders out of position.
  • Try to take no longer than 10 seconds to create a goal scoring opportunity to goal

Progressions

  • Add another defender to make it 5v3 to begin with.
  • Once the ball breaks into the 9 a defender can join in after 5 seconds to make it a 3v3 situation.

End Game.

Similar to the original play phase, if a player loses the ball, or misses the goal they must complete a technical activity to the side.  This way the team in possession shall still have an overload as the game continues.
