Rondo (15 mins)

Possession Rondo Drill

 

Objective:

Improve possession skills and quick decision-making in a dynamic environment.

 

Setup:

- 6 players: 4 positioned on the outside, 2 in the middle (one as the defender).

- Use a defined playing area suitable for quick passing and movement.

 

Instructions:

1. The possession-based team aims to retain the ball for as long as possible.

2. Player in the middle uses two touches, while those on the outside use only one touch.

3. The team strives to maintain possession for a duration of 2 minutes, signaled by the coach's whistle.

 

Coaching Points:

1. Quick Play: Encourage players to make swift decisions, emphasising one-touch passing on the outside.

2. Scanning: Emphasise the importance of players scanning the field for options, enhancing awareness.

3. Defensive Skills: Guide the defender in disrupting the possession, promoting defensive strategies within the drill.

Technical Possesion (10 mins)

Technical Possession

 

Objective:

Enhance technical skills and build confidence on the ball through controlled possession.

 

Setup:

- Players engage in technical possession in a spacious area.

- Goalkeeper operates within their designated zone.

 

Instructions:

1. Players aim to build confidence on the ball by maintaining possession in a large area.

2. The goalkeeper serves as a pivotal point, with players receiving and returning the ball to the goalkeeper before the GK plays to a different player.

3. The challenge is to achieve 20 consecutive passes within their own half, emphasizing precise ball control and distribution.

 

Intensity Focus:

- The session demands high intensity to stretch players both physically and mentally.

 

Structure:

- Conduct three rounds, each lasting 6 minutes.

- The team that reaches 20 passes first in each round is deemed the winner.

 

This session is designed to elevate technical prowess, encouraging players to navigate possession challenges while instilling a sense of confidence on the ball.

Objective:

Enhance the build-up play of one team in the initial third during an 8v8 match scenario.


Setup:

- 3 Target goals with a score zone/receiving zone in front.

- 8 players on each team, including 1 goalkeeper.

- Emphasize the build-up phase in the initial third of the field.

- Implement a receiving zone where players are allowed to receive and finish.


Questions for Players:

1. Strategic Luring:

  - Can the team strategically lure in the opposition before exploiting the weak side?

  - Encourage players to assess the opposition's movements and exploit spaces created.


2. Aerial Passes

  - Are players capable of finding full backs with well-timed aerial balls when necessary? Taking out the forward players.

  - Emphasise the importance of varied passing techniques to unlock different areas of the field.


3. Spatial Awareness:

  - Can the ball be played into space, and do players recognise when to advance if necessary?

  - Encourage players to assess available space, promoting dynamic movement and forward progression when opportunities arise.


4. Decision-Making Reset:

  - In instances of sub-optimal decisions, when is it appropriate to circulate the ball and reset the play?

  - Emphasise the role of the goalkeeper as a key facilitator in restarting the build-up and maintaining possession when needed.


Additional Instructions:


- Opposition need to be compact when defending.

- This session provides a platform for focused improvement in the build-up phase, encouraging strategic play, aerial ball proficiency, spatial awareness, and decision-making flexibility within the designated receiving zone.

- If the players show good understanding, can we start them from deeper or tight areas to play out.
