Theme
build up from the back (zone 1&2 to 3) against a medium and high press
Opposition / Problem
medium and high press with a matched midfield
Principles
In Possession
i. one player always in wide channels establish width
ii. create vertical channels (low to high)
iii. always threaten space behind opposition (one player on the shoulder of opposition lowest player)
iv. one player to occupy space in front of CB, pivot
v. maintain defensive balance / out number opposition behind the ball (in positions to prevent / delay counter attacks)
Field Break Down
5 vertical channels = wide left, half left, center, half right, wide right
4 even horizontal zones = 1 being closest to own goal and 4 closest to opposition goal
Amount of Area
Full field
No. of Players
16
Key Words/Phrase
(1) shape (2) drive (3) under (4) back foot (5) press (6) diagonal pocket (7) secure
Guided Questions
(1) what is the position where I can receive the ball to face forward and draw pressure of opposition?
(2) how can I support the ball carrier?
(3) how is your mark defending?
(4) can you create space for anyone else? higher up the field / channels
(5) what should I do if the ball is lost?
Learning Outcomes
(1) shape in playing out from zones 1 and 2

(3) maintain balance when playing out in zone 1 & 2

Organization
Work in groups of three. Each group has their own ball. Progress from one end to the opposite end, completing the challenges provided. Rotate the targets after each challenge. When a target has the ball they represent a CB and the players in the middle represent a MF-3.
Regression
Targets (CB) take on 2-touch minimum to allow midfield more time to move / get shape to progress ball forward.
Objective
Movement to create space to receive and pass forward.
Challenges for groups (45-60 seconds each)
(1) can you fill 3 of the 4 boxes at all times? - ensure the midfield three spread out and create triangles, also have straight lines between teammates
(2) can you combine with a midfielder before playing into the striker?
(3) can you rotate to receive the ball in different areas of the grid? - avoid taking away passing angles of your group or the target players
(4) can you empty a box for a team mate to fill?
(5) can you receive the ball in a position to play forwards?
Key Points
(1) body shape - body shape open to the field
(2) scan - look away from the ball
(3) quality of pass - pass it to the correct foot to set-up teammates next action
(4) cue for movement - when to move to create space for teammate to pass the ball, not to early so that a defender can close the player down before the pass if made
(5) low / diagonal pocket - provide a low passing option for the (CB)

Organization
BLUE = 1GK, 2CB, 2CM, 3FWD
RED = 1GK, 2CB, 2FB, 2CM, 1FWD
Score a goal on the opposite goal for a point. If you win the ball in the opposition half then score it is worth two points. In the BLUES defensive half of the field the corners of the field are not in play.
Restriction
If the RED CM are to often out of position limit their movement to only one in each half at a time. They can switch. One low to keep balance, support the CB, and one high to stretch opposition and support CF.
Progression
If the REDS are experiencing to much success change the BLUE to a 1-2-3-2 to allow blue to press both RED CB. If the success continues change to a 1-1-4-2 so both shapes match across the field.
Objective
Secure possession and progress the ball through each zone.
Key Points
(1) 3-players play within the width of the 18yd box, alongside or under the ball. Allows for opportunities to switch the ball and to control space in transition. Usually will be 2-CB and 1-MF. If CB goes wide can opposite FB fill in. If CB goes high can MF of FB drop in.
(2) Always support the CB in central area, diagonal pocket to be able to receive facing forward or to drag opposition. If the ball is lost this player is in central areas to close down dangerous attacks. If the CM cannot support in the diagonal pocket can the opposite FB fill this space.
(3) CM stretch the field and try to find space between opposition CM and CB. Stay high to link with CF.
(4) CB, FB, low MF players always find space to receive and face forward to allow first touch to be positive and drive forward. If receiving a pass facing backwards play the way you are facing and then change your body shape.
(5) If the opposition is compact in central areas play shorter passes in overloads to drag opposition to create gaps to channels to play into.
(6) GK is area to create triangle with CB or diamond with CB and low MF.
(7) No pressure on the FB in possession can CF or CM make forward run into space.
(8) Vertical pass to CM or CF can FB and CDM make third man run.

Organization
Red = 1GK, 2CB, 2FB, 1DM, 2CM, 1CF
Blue = 1CB, 3CM, 3FWD
Player full match rules. Red scores by dribbling or receiving in the end zone. If red scores the ball restarts from their GK / goal kick.
Objective
Build up from zone 1 or 2 (where possession is won) into zone 3. Players to recognize different options based on the ball, opposition, teammates, and space.
Regression
Blue MF man-mark the red MF to allow red CB more time on the ball.
Progression
1) Encourage blue #9 & #10 to pivot and screen out red #10 while pressing red CB.
2) Change the blue shape = 2WB, 3CM, 2CF.
3) Add FB to the blue team. Change the blue shape = 2FB, 3CM, 3FWD
Measurable
Red can progress from zone 1-2 to zone 3 with controlled possession 5 times during the phase of play. Must include one from goal-kick, one from a throw-in, and one from a transition.
