Know your natural triangles. During the transition from defending to attacking, should the 7 or 11 be on the ball, it's okay to play it back (the black-dotted line represents a pass) to the 6 or 8 (holding mids) who are moving forward.

The RW (11), LW (7) and Striker (9) stay between the lines (their backline and their midfield) as we are advancing the ball up the field. This will give you more time on the ball and make the defense shift. We want both.
