Technical

THE SESSION:

Extended Warm - Up (Technical with principles of play involved). 30 x 15.

Passing Drill in pairs. 

Possession is switched to start drill at all times. Ball then played into middle player and set to pair who didn't play into the middle. 

Same applies upon second play into the middle then pair plays straight pass out. Always run in straight lines. 

Sequence repeats for 60 seconds x 4. 

7 minutes total with changeover and explanation. 

KEY POINTS:

Always switch the play before playing into the middle players. 

Run straight pass diagonal into the middle. 

PROGRESSION:

  • Diagonal runs added if necessary.

THE SESSION: 6 v 6 v 6 Transition game 

  • Team in possession aim to complete 5 passes in their area against 2 defenders allowed into the area upon first touch. Once they complete 5 passes they find their team mate (unchallenged) in middle zone to switch play opposite end zone. If team is dispossessed they swap with defending team and send 2 into opposite zone to defend. Each switch is a point for each team. 
  • 2 x 3 mins. 8 - 10 mins including explanation and interventions.

  • Player receiving in the middle zone after 5 passes can be challenged.

3 Zone game

THE SESSION: 8 v 8 or 7 v 7 +GK 3 zone game. 3 x 3 mins. 54 x 45. (5 yards in from touch line on both sides. Half a pitch length)

Both teams play 3-2-2. Players have to play through each zone to get into an attacking situation. 

Defenders can dribble or receive a forward pass into middle zone. One midfield player can dribble or pass into attacking zone. 

Attackers and midfield players can only defend in their own zone. They cannot track runners out of their zone. 

KEY POINTS:

PROGRESSION:

  • In second set attackers and midfield players can drop down a zone to create overloads in defence and midfield. 
  • In third set zones taken out. Still focus on build up and ask for creative ideas to create overloads.
