Barcelona Line-up 4-3-3

Formations

4-3-3

Barcelona employs the attacking 4-3-3 formation and is one of the most successful and exciting teams to watch in world soccer. The formation works best when a team is going forward and attempting to win a match, rather than simply trying to contain the opposition. Many clubs in world soccer uses the attacking 4-3-3 formation but rarely with such devastating effect as Barcelona. Here's a look at how it works from an attacking standpoint.

Goalkeeper:

Marc-André ter Stegen

Ter Stegen would retain his role as a sweeper keeper, with Gerard Piqué getting more freedom and Samuel Umtiti dropping a bit further down the pitch

Back Four:

Right-back : Nélson Semedo (#2)

Centre-back(right) : Gerard Piqué (#3)

Centre-back(left) : Samuel Umtiti (#23)

Left-back : Jordi Alba (#18)

Midfield :

Defensive midfielder : Sergio Busquets (#5)

Playmaker : Ivan Rakitic (#4)

Shadow striker : Ousmane Dembélé (#11)

Forwards:

Right winger : Lionel Messi (#10)

Centre forward : Luis Suárez (#9)

Left winger : Philippe Coutinho (#7)

Nélson Semedo and Jordi Alba would need to combine with the wingers, and overlap frequently.

Sergio Busquets would be the glue of the team, holding its shape with Ivan Rakitic acting as the main distributor of the ball, and the main assist man.

Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé would need to make darting runs by cutting in and showcasing their dribbling skills.

But the players who would need to adapt would be Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez.

Messi would need to be the centre of attack, with everything near the opposition box running through. If a long shot had to be taken, he would be the one and if the wingers needed to have the ball, he would thread it to them.

Barcelona in possession defensive and middle 1/3

Barcelona loves to have possession of the ball and will make many small quick passes among the defense and midfield. Once they have the ball in the back the will pass it among themselves looking for openings in the midfield or wing players. They feel very comfortable with possession and have many talented players who can break down the field and control the midfield. Barcelona will use the triangle formation to move the ball around. For example 2, 10, and 5 will make several passes among each other while they move around the opponents. But you need to be careful to keep your shape or they will switch the point of attack.

#5 and #11 are attacking midfield and they control the midfield but are offensively minded. They are always looking forward and will dribble into the attacking 1/3.

#10 and #7 will stay out wide to stretch the field to make pockets of space for #5 and #11. #10 is one of the best playmakers in the world and feels comfortable with the ball.

#4 is a defensive midfield and will move up in the attack but will always be thinking backwards and will step to the ball after a turnover. However, he will still be dangerous in the attack.

Defending

Eventhough their formation says 4 defenders, they really always have 5. As mentioned earlier, #4 is an extra defender and will press the ball at the top of the defensive 1/3.

#3 and #23 are tall and strong and good in the air, so they will force play outside to the wings. #18 and #2 are very good at 1 v 1 defending and will stop the attack outside before an opportunity arises. But even if the opponent can get a cross in, #3 and #23 will clear it out and build from the back.

If need be, #5 and #11 can also drop back to defend or open up for a counterattack.

Barcelona attacking

As i said earlier, Barcelona feels at home with the ball at their feet. They will possess the ball in the attacking 1/3 and will make anywhere from 3 passes to 25 passes before scoring. They are always looking to move the ball and find openings in the defense. They will make overlaping runs outside.and will pass it backward if need be just to keep possession.

They will move the ball from side to side to keep the defense moving and opening spaces for through balls or space to dribble.

Majority of the opportunities, will have #10 involved somehow. Even if he doesn't touch the ball.
