1v1 - Basics (10 mins)

Start with a general 1v1 warm up in pairs

Equipment

Four markers to form a 10yd x 20 yd grid with a small sided goal (cones) 4 yds apart. 

Work in pairs, with a couple of balls each

Session

Attacker starts with the ball and must try to dribble around the goalkeeper. Attacker must place their foot on the ball between the two cones to score a point. Go three times each and swap. See who gets the most points.

Progression

GK rolls ball to attacker to control before attack and attacker has 6 seconds to score a point. 

Coaching points:

  • As per mechanics - watch the GK to see if they are watching the ball. 
  • Allow session to flow and go through 3 sets each. Then work on the mechanics, decision making of the Goalkeeper. 
  • Are they moving down the line when the ball is out of the feet.
  • Do they commit when going for the ball, leading with hands? 
  • Agility, balance and coordination needed in order to keep onus on attacker

1v1 - Improvement (15 mins)

General 1v1 progression - group of 4

Equipment

Work in pairs, with a couple of balls each

Session

3 attackers. Each Attacker takes on teh GK in turn and must dribble through the small goal

Progression

1v1 - In goal (20 mins)

Move into the goal (as per their age/ability) to work on realistic scenarios

Equipment

Right sized goal for the age/ability of the keeper.

Two sets of discs in a square (1yd x 1yd) on the edge of the box.

Balls with server. 

Session

Attacker in each box on the side furthers away from the goal. GK starts facing into goal with back to server. One command 'go' server plays the ball to Attacker (goalkeeper turns round) who takes 1 touch and dribble towards the goal to take on the goalkeeper. Can only shoot if they pass the GK. Server alternates passing to each attacker. 

Progression

Attackers have 6 seconds to score 

Attackers have the option to shoot or take on the goalkeeper

1v1 - small sided game (15 mins)

Finish off with a Small Sided game which promotes 1v1 / through balls

Equipment

5x5 with keepers in two goals. mark off a distance outside the box with markers

Session

Normal game rules apart from:
  • Start from the keepers
  • No offside (Although not allowed into shaded area before ball).
  • Can only attempt to score when inside the blue line.

  • Ball has to be passed into the shaded area for player to run onto. Only 1 attacker / 1 defender allowed behind the blue line. 

Coaching points:

    GKs to stay alert, on the front foo; Can they intercept a through ball?

    As per 1v1 sessions, move towards the ball (down the line) once ball out of feet of attacker. Can they delay until defender intervenes?

    Look for distribution straight to attackers.

    Attackers to find space.
