What
- SSG 9v9
- Blue: GK-2-4-1-1 v Red: GK-4-2-2
- Full width now
- Players brought in to make up the 9v9
- Tapered lines where there are no FBs or opposition wide players
- Highlighted area is the function we were working on earlier
- Blue team, execute the patterns that were covered in the function.
- Red team, play forward, play direct, manage a countdown for them to score within.
- Hopefully the patterns and pictures from the function will continue based on what the opposition do.
- Reds to defend tight to opposition players (e.g. ST's go tight on CB's, CM's go tight on 6 & 8, CB's go tight to ST, Full backs go tight to Wide Midfield).
- This should free up the Blue #10.
- Manage the Reds and paint the pictures to the Blues.
- Manage the Reds to press and then give the solutions to the Blues.
- Coach them to now play through via #10.
- Get the players to understand the roles and responsibilities of the Blues in relation to each other.
- Coach the individual and the unit they operate in.
- On the ball/around the ball/away from the ball.
- EG; As #6 and #8 split, coach #10 timing of movement, #6/8 support and timing of movement in wide areas once #10 receives the ball.
- If #6 goes forward, #8 to shuffle over and protect central area (defensive balance).
- #9 can you make a channel run to draw CB/ through ball to play in behind, or pin a CB (combination play between #9 and #10 can be fluid).
- Manage the greens to now defend sit and defend narrow and try to stop the ball into the #10 (e.g. 1 ST force play wide, other sits in for the switch of pass, CM's screen #10, back four stay compact and protect the goal)
- Coach to play around rather than through
- EG; If #10 is blocked off centrally, can he get wide to receive/ drag Red CM’s.
- Coach quality of pass from #6/8 to either #10 if he is not tracked, or directly to #9.
- #9 can you hold up play, coach supporting forward runs e.g. combination between #9 and #10 or #9 and #6/8.
- Coach wide players too keep their width and play the ball inside/behind the back four.
- This is also your opportunity to demonstrate how you attack the opposition when the ball goes wide always with the roles of your #10 & #9 paramount.
- You will need to affect the wide players in detail in how they receive the ball, and get information on to the two defenders and GK.
- Ensure you coach the wide left player and two CMs in relation to the ball when it goes wide right and vice versa.
- Maintain a focus on the units/team in the SSG and make sure the units knit together and work as one.
- Detail to the #10 and #9 could be how the #10 now receives the ball from wide players and looks to thread the ball into the #9.
- Again there will need to be detail given to the #9 on the type of run, timing of run, receiving skills ETC
- Ensure the game has a flow and mimics the 11v11 in terms of throw ins, goal kicks etc.

Game Model Reference/Welsh Way Principles
- Create and exploit overloads / Finding the spare player
What- Function to SSG - Combination Play with a #10 & #9
Conditions- Set up with pitch geography in mind, the Blues are trying to play through and around the Reds.
- Server (Yellow) plays the ball into a Blue CM to start with, Reds to defend with realism, managed to press the ball if necessary.
Challenges- Blues to create overloads against the Red CM players.
- Combinations used are up to the coach, obviously its key to use the #10 and get the #9 to occupy and stretch the Red CBs.
Targets- Blues are trying to score past the GK.
- Reds press the ball, win possession, any combination, manage a countdown if necessary and get it back into the servers.
Key Points- Coach the type of pass into either/both CMs
- Coach the type of run/receiving skills executed by both of the Blue CMs.
- Important that as this is happening that the #10 plays off the shoulders of both of the Red CMs and shows their feet to the player in possession.
- The server can be used as a 'bounce' player with a maximum two touch.
Focus on- Width and depth
- Penetration
- Decision Making
- Quality of pass
- Angles and distances
- Body Position
Coaching Process- Observation
- Diagnoses
- Accurate Recreation
- Corrective Feedback/Demo
- Player Rehearsal
- Play Live
Technical- How? When? Where? Why? Who? What If?
Problem 1- Reds to defend tight to opposition CMs (freeing up the Blue #10)
- Manage the Reds and paint the pictures to the Blues.
- Manage the Reds to press and then give the solutions to the Blues.
Solution 1- Get the players to understand the roles and responsibilities of the Blues in relation to each other.
- Coach the type of pass from the server and the receiving skills of the two CMs.
Problem 2- Manage the Reds to now defend narrow and try to stop the ball into the #10.
Solution 2
