Description

STRENGTHS:

Opposite man of the diamond should always be the spare man, if they tuck their winger into him the opposite FB should be on.

  • Back 4 means the defence are more comfortable
  • Strong spine - CB,CDM,10, 2 CF's
  • Extra protection in front of the back four in the shape of a defensive midfielder – this can often prevent the opposition no.10 from playing
  • In the centre of midfield you usually have an overload – 4 v 3 or even 4 v 2
  • Full backs can push on from deep
  • 2 strikers and a 10, which most teams won't be used to playing against with most teams playing with 1 CF.

WEAKNESSES

  • The most obvious is the lack of width – full backs can get overloaded against a team playing with full back and wingers
  • Similarly, you are relying on our full backs to be your attacking width
  • Space in behind attacking full backs can drag central players out of position
  • The two central midfielders have a lot of shuttling to do so need to be extremely fit
  • The full backs are effectively wing backs so again need to be extremely fit
OOP PRINCIPLES
  • Trying to stop teams playing down the sides of the pitch, forcing play inside to teammates
  • Make the pitch compact as possible, overloading the central areas. Cannot be deep forcing them to play long
  • Back 4 need to be higher up the pitch, and GK position needs to be able to sweep
  • Be aware of danger - balls over the top or behind the full backs
  • Covering team mates when they're out of position - this is key in this shape as we are encouraging rotations
  • Delaying play when the ball goes out of play so we can get back into shape
  • If you are outnumbered in the press, stop the easy pass.
IN POSSESSION
  • Shape - width and depth
  • Create Overloads - 2v2,3v2,4v3
  • Patience, build the play up using the midfield and CF's
  • In 1v1 situations, key we protect possession
  • Play the switch when possible
  • Quick decisive play when in the final third
TRANSITIONS
  • When winning possession first 5 seconds are vital to ensure we retain possession and advance up the pitch.
  • Spread play, good early passing and make the most of the opposition being out of position.
  • Quality on the ball, find the spare man.

Playing out from a goal kick

CB - Deep and wide in the box

FB's - High and wide

CDM (6) - Always show for the ball

First Phase pass

GK - has the option to pass to either CB, 6 or clip the full backs

6- starts centrally but move either side to create a better angle to receive the ball, if you don't receive the ball you will have created space for the 7,8 to drop in a get the ball

If the 6 peels off to either side the 7/8 who's side he goes too, is to drop into the space he has left. For e.g. If the 6 goes left and gets on the ball the 8 if he is marked rotates into the 6's position.

Strikers plays on the last man

10 is find space between the defensive lines

Movement/Rotations

If they play a 4231/451 which is likely

  • CB's to get the ball off the keeper
  • If the 6 moves either side his man has to go with him or he can receive the ball unopposed
  • Creating space to come out the opposite side.
  • With this movement it gives the 7 the option to drop in and get the ball as the free man.

This principle works on the other side of the pitch also if the ball goes that side.

Possession higher up the pitch

The rotations are key here between the diamond - as they will be happy to sit in once we have possession.
  • Movement from the front 2 and the 10 is key once we have the ball in these areas (shaded)
  • Movements such as the 10 running beyond the strikers, if that happens one of the strikers has to drop in to the 10.
  • Both strikers can't spin, one goes in behind and one will have to show for feet.
  • Strikers shouldn't be more than 15 yards apart at all times
  • When the ball is being built up from the left/right side one striker should always be right down the middle of the pitch, the other one showing ball side.

If the ball is in these areas, the players wide of the diamond are to shuffle over keeping the diamond shape.

  • Leave the furthest man to the opposite full back

If they play out, this is how we set up

  • Strikers to take up this position to force them long, stopping the CB's wanting the ball and making it hard for the FB's to get on the ball.
  • When pressing the CB's curve your run to force the pass inside.

The 2 highlighted players are also key here to stop the CM's getting on the ball

When are we in danger

Ball is with the opposition GK, in this shape we are open to being hurt in the shaded areas

  • This is why is is key, the CF's split and take up these positions.

  • This will discourage the GK to play the ball to the CB's and also means it is a much harder pass to play into the FB

If they play to the CB

If the Gk plays to the CB

  • Ball side CF shifts over the the FB
  • Far CF shuffles over to press the CB - leave the far FB
  • The 10's job is to press the player in possession but also stop the passing lane into the highlighted player
