SSG (20 mins)

Small Sided Game

  • a pitch wider than it is longer.
  • Two mini goals in the wide areas at each end.
  • Players split into two even teams.

Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Awareness: BOTS analogy - Where is; the ball, opposition, teammates, space. Technical Competence: 1. Receive - back foot with ball rolling across body. 2. Ball Movement - Touch out from feet. Release: Firm pass striking through the ball.
Technical Tactical
Platforms: Balance beneath the ball through central vertical channel to support switch of playShapes & Layers: Creating triangles and diamonds with vertical layers; i.e support to left, right, above, underneath the ball). Spare player: Looking for the spare player out of congestion;

Receiving to switch play (20 mins)

Practice Set - Up & Description


  • Players placed into groups of 3; one in the centre of an internal square; two on the outside of an external square.
  • Players on outside CANNOT be on the same side as each other.
  • Players must transition the ball from one outside player to the other. Ball must always go through player in the middle of the square.
  • After passing into the middle player; outside player must then move around the outside of the square to another empty side.
  • Rotate central players after set amount of time so all players have a turn as central player.
  • Graphic only has one group of three; but ideally session should be done with multiple to increase cognitive load on players awareness / passing and receiving / movement & positioning.

6v2 - Switching play possession drill (20 mins)

Practice Set - Up & Description 

  • Area set up as one large square; divided into four smaller squares.
  • 6 v 2 - with a 4 v 2 in one square and two in possession players on outside of area. 
  • 4v2 looks to maintain possession; when a pass is made to either of players A & B; if the opportunity presents; they are to play a pass out to players C (A) or D (B).
  • Once this occurs; defending players put pressure on receiving player and in possession players shift to support.

SSG Switching Play (20 mins)

Small Sided Game


  • Pitch wider than it is longer; 
  • 2 goals in wide areas at each end; 
  • team in possession must spread across all vertical zones. 
  • Team out of possession must collapse the pitch into two zones.
  • Team in possession receives a two bonus point if they score from a switch of play across zones.
