Screen 1

The play will start with one of the red-team centre mids they will look to play the ball with pace to find gaps between the defensive line. The attacking team will use certain triggers to understand how to move into space and play the ball, or when to recover the ball and switch the play to the other wide area.

Main points for the attacking team (Tactical);

- Play the ball with pace with information on the pass.

- Recycle the ball to maintain possession under pressure.

- Movement off to ball to create passing angles.

- Must shift to offer the player on-the-ball support.

- Recognise when to pass

Opposition management

- Stay compact

- Pressure on the player with the ball

- Don't leave gaps

Session details

Red team 11v11 formation - 3-4-3

Blue team 11v11 formation - 4-3-3

Timings - 3x3 minute blocks - 1 minute rest between blocks.

When resetting, players must run back to their positions.

Area size: 60x40 - 218m2 (Intensive practice)

Session play

Play will always start with a central midfielder, they must move the ball with pace and accuracy as this is the key to exploiting space. The 2 centre mids can choose to pass early or drive with the ball to force players out of their position. Playing wide must be supported by a centre mid and the number 9 creating a triangle.

Block 1

How can the number 9 move to create a triangle and support going forwards?

Block 2

Can we invite pressure on and play a 1-2

Block 3

After recycling the ball, can the other number 8 drop into half space to be ready to receive?

Challenges

Can we be explosive off the ball to find space

Can we ensure pass accuracy to the correct foot to maintain possession efficiently?

Can we look to pass the ball forward the majority of the time.

Can we make triangles with the player on the ball for support

Conditions

The ball must start with the red Centre mid.

If the ball goes out of bounds, it resets.

If play is switched quickly and a goal is assisted in wide areas, the goal is worth double.

Targets

Can we aim to score in under 7 passes?

Problems given to the defending team.

Block 1

Can we intercept the passing lane from the striker with the blue number 6.

Block 2

Can the wing backs anticipate the pass to the winger and press high?

Block 3

Have the number 6 drop to intercept the passing lane of the centre mids,

Solutions to give to the attacking team

Block 1

Have the 9 drop, if the 6 continues to follow him, the centre mid will take that space instead.

Block 2

Have the winger play the ball back to the centre mid and make a run behind, as he has moved the wing back out of position there is space.

Block 3

- Have the number 9 drop to link the play to the 8, or play directly to the winger.

Screen 2

The 3 Centre backs have been taken out of what would be a 3-4-3, leaving a front seven to switch the play with and exploit wide spaces. This has been done to show the red team how they can use players that aren't behind them, such as a CB, to switch the play indirectly.

Large sided games - 8v8

Large sided game based on session 1, however play is now free.

Main points for the attacking team;

- Can the number 9 drop into half spaces to pick up the ball and help play be switched.

- Can we make runs off the ball without the intention of receiving the ball, but creating space for teammates.

Opposition management

Work in a low block to make the team hard to split.

Move as a unit in conjunction with the ball

React to the pass not when the player receives the ball.

Mark tight

Session details;

Blue team 11v11 formation - 4-3-3 (Minus LW, RW, ST)

Red team 11v11 formation - 3-4-3 (Minus LCB, RCB, CB)

Timings - 3x3 minute blocks - 1 minute rest between blocks.

When resetting, players must run back to their positions.

Area size: 60x50 - 187.5m2 (Intensive practice)

Session play

The ball will start with the blue team number 1, they will play the ball out to the centre mids to keep realism, as the GK wouldn't typically pass this high up. centre mids will either play or pass the ball off depending on pressure. The red team look to score against the blue team GK, and the blue team will try to steal the ball back and score.

Block 1

What body position to use when receiving in the centre of the field to play the ball wide.

Block 2

Can the LW and RW cut in to make space for the LM and RM to drive - runs off the ball to create space.

Block 3

Check for understanding and refine.

Challenges

Can we create space for out teammates?

Can our teammates understand these triggers and play to players with newly found space?

Conditions

No corners, GKs only.

Run back to position on recovery

If a goal is scored in under 10 passes for the red team, the goal is worth 2 points.

Targets

Can we take fewer than 5 touches when we aren't running into space with the ball - this might require more

Can we ensure we aren't giving up a free pass option.

Problems to give to the defending team

Block 1

Can the 6 block the passing lane to the 9.

Block 2

Can the 2 centre mids press the red team centre mids on the start of the match

Block 3

Block passing lanes when the ball is wide, block the lanes through the 2 centre mids.

Solutions to give to the attacking team

Block 1

When the number 9 drifts one side, can either the LW or RW tuck into this new space to receive the ball, triggering a LM or RM run.

Block 2

Can we use out body as a shield and our safe foot to sweep the ball wide to the LM or RM.

Block 3

Have the furthest number 8 make a forward run, if followed by the defender, have the far LM or RM drop the the CM spot to receive the ball and play.
