Dribbling Option 1 (15 mins)

Organization

 - Place two cones with balls on top 15 yards apart (Target)

 - Place two cones 5 yards in front with one cone being 2 yards diagonally from one of the target cones.

 - Split the players up, placing one half of the group at starting point 1 and the other half at starting point 2

 - Players at starting point 1 begin with the ball

Activity

- The player at starting point 1 will start the session by passing the ball in to the player at the front of starting point 2

- The attacker receives the ball and will attempt to knock on of then balls off the cones

- To take the shot the player must be behind the 5 yard line and inside the closest cone to the ball they are shooting at.

- The defender must stay their side of the line and attempt to stop the attackers ball from hitting the targets

The focus of this session is to work on the players changes of direction and speed with the ball at their feet. We are also looking for them to be able to sell a disguise in order to create a little bit of space. It is key that we have players attempting this as often as possible and so if you have more than 3 in any line, make a 2nd work setup.

Progression

- If the players are finding it thought to hit the ball on the cone, make an adjustment to create a goal using cones rather than a ball on top of a cone.

Dribbling Option 2 (15 mins)

Organization

- 10 x 15 area

- Split the group in to pairs

- Pairs will take it in turns to be dribblers or passers

- If they are passers they will line up with one either side of the tunnel with one player having a ball

- If they are dribblers they will line up with a ball each at the end of the tunnel

Activity

- The dribblers will attempt to get from one end of the tunnel to the opposite end as many times as possible in one minute.

- The dribblers will go a maximum of two players at a time to be able to keep 2m apart

 - As the dribblers attempt to run through the passers will attempt to pass to each  other as many times as possible

- Each pair will get two goes at dribbling and 3 goes at passing.

 - Once each team has completed the above the team with the most accumulated passes and end to end dribbles wins.

Progression

 - If a ball hits another ball both teams go back to 0 for that round.

The focus for the session is for the dribblers to be aware of the balls coming in from the sides and be able to manipulate their ball to avoid a collision. The passers are looking to find a passing lane to be able to get the ball across to their partner as often as possible.

Dribbling Option 3

Organization

 - Split the group in to 3 groups

 - Create a starting point for each team

 - 12 yards in front of each starting point place a 10x10x10 triangle with the tip closest to the starting points

 - Each Player has a ball

Activity

- The players will dribble towards the tip of the triangle, where on approach the will perform a skill and then accelerate either to the right or left base cone

- They will go around the base cone and then back to the start

- Work through different skills for the players to perform on the approach to the triangle, giving the players a couple of minutes to practice each one

- Progress to a competition where each player in the group will go twice and the first team to finish wins

- Add in 2 extra points for the team that displays the best technique and disguise on the skill

- Get the players involved by asking them for skills to work on

The focus of this to develop an understanding of change of direction and speed. The skill is important as it will create a disguise that we will be able to build on by accelerating in to the space that we have created. Players will need to be encouraged to be persistent, coaches can reinforce good technique through consistently catching the players doing the good things and being positive.

Dribbling Option 4

Organization

 - Players spread out in a 25 x 25 yard area

 - Three players are given a cone that they must hold while also having the ball at their feet

 - The remainder of the players will have a ball at their feet

Activity

- The players without the cone will run around the area attempting to keep the ball away from players with the cones

- The players with the cones will attempt to use their cone to hit off the other players balls

Rules

1. Freeze tag: If your ball is hit you must pick your ball up and hold it in the air above your head. The only way you can be freed is if a player on your team passes their ball through your legs.

2. Defenders Points: Each player in the group of 3 defenders is trying to get the most points by hitting an attackers ball. The defender with the most points at the end of the time limit wins.

3. Attackers Points: Each attacker starts with 3 points, they have to try and keep their three points throughout the time limit. Every time they are hit they lose a point.

Progress

 - Change so that the players with the cones have balls and rather than hit the cones of the attacker ball they will try to pass their ball of the other players balls.

The focus of this session is to work on the players changes of direction and speed with the ball at their feet. We are also looking for them to be able to recognize where the trouble is an manipulate the ball to keep it safe and out of the way of the defenders as much as possible.

Dribbling Option 5

Organization

 - Place 2 goals (gates) 10-12 yards apart on the same horizontal line

 - Place a line of cones 5 yards from goal and then another 10 yards from goal

 - Players will be in 2 groups central between the 2 goals but facing them 20 yards out

 - All players will begin with a ball

Activity

 - The first player in line 1 will dribble their ball out and shoot at goal from anywhere between the two lines that are 5 and 10 yards away from goal

 - As soon as the player from line 1 has taken their shot they then become the defender but must defend from inside the 5 yard line to keep physical distance

 - As soon as player 1 has shot, player 2 will attack and try to score in either goal from between the two lines.

 - After each player has taken their shot they become the defender and a player from the opposite line will then attack.

Progression

 - Limit the time they have to take the shot e.g. 5 seconds from when they first step out with the ball

The focus of this session is for players to be aware of where the open space is and attack it at speed in before the opportunity closes. An addition to this is if that space does close do they then have the ability to create the space to find a finish. Coaches will be looking to emphasize making the game as simple as possible, driving in to the space and what touches we may use.

Dribbling Option 6

Organization

- Split the group in to pairs

- Place two cones 10 yards apart, one of the pair will stand centrally between the two cones

- Place another two cones 10 yards apart 3M from the original cones, the 2nd player will stand centrally between these two cones

- Each group will number their cones 1 and 2

Activity

- The players will start with one hand in the air to let each other know that they are ready.

- On the coaches call of one of the numbers the players will race to the corresponding cone of the call

- First one to their respective cone wins the point.

- This would also be a great opportunity to allow the players take responsibility for their learning by asking them to call the numbers for their own groups.

Progression

- Add a ball and rather than them having to run their they must dribble and stop their ball on the cone.

 - Ball must be moving when they are waiting

The focus for this session is players ability to play from audio triggers, quick reactions and ball manipulation skills. This should be a fun exercise for the players while also generating a competitive edge.

Dribbling option 7

Organization

- Split the group in to pairs

- Each player in the pair starts in a gate and has a gate 10-15 yards directly in front of them

- The two players gates will be inline with each  other and 5 yards apart horizontally

- Place a line 4 yards in front of the starting gates

- One player will start with the ball the other without

Activity

 - The player that starts with the ball will dribble out past the line with the ball

 - The player without the ball will stay with them moving between their own gates

 - Once past the line the player with the ball will then attempt to get through wither of the two gates

 - The defender will attempt to stay with the player with the ball and get through their own gate as the player with the ball gets through theirs.

 - If the attacker is able to get through the gate without the defender they get the point

 - After each go the player with the ball will switch

 - After 2 minutes the player with the most points wins

Progression

 - Give both players a ball to make it a little tougher for the defender

 - put a time limit on the attacker to get through the gates

The focus for the session is for players to develop their dribbling, and running with the ball at speed. We are looking to see who is able to think about when  to have small touches and when to have big touches. A lot of this activity is also about disguise and acceleration. f the attacker is able to sell the defender and change direction at speed or stop and start again at speed, it will make it difficult for the defender.

Dribbling option 8

Organization

- Place two cones with balls on top of them 20 yards apart vertically and 10 yards apart horizontally

- Place a cone line vertically between the two cones

- The cone line should be 16 yards long, two yards short from the cone at each end

- The cone line will create two channels

- At the end of channel 1 place team 1

- At the opposite end at the end of channel 2 place team 2

Activity

- Player 1 from team 1 will start off by dribbling along the channel until the reach the end of the cone line where they will then attempt to knock off team 2 ball

- As soon as the shot has been taken the first player in team 2 will dribble in to their channel attempting to get past the end of the cone line and shoot at team 1 ball.

- Staying in their own channel player 1 will attempt to recover to block player 2 shot

- The process will then repeat with the next player in line 1 setting off to try and hit team 2 ball and player 2 trying to recover and stop them.

- The first team to knock the other teams ball off wins.

The focus of this session is purely dribbling at speed while keeping the ball under control. We are looking to highlight the thought that when an opportunity to drive in to space presents itself, we want to use that space as quickly as possible, not allowing defenders to recover. Players should be thinking about length of touches while remaining in control.

Dribbling option 9

Organization

- 15 x 20 area

- Split the group in to 2 teams, starting at opposite sides of the area

- Place all cones available in the area evenly spread out with half the correct way up and half upside down

- Each player starts with a ball

Activity

 - Each team will be given a way in which they have to turn the cones (Correct way = domes, upside down = dishes)

- On the coaches call the players will take it in turns to dribble out, flick the cone over with their foot and then dribble back.

- Once the player is back the next person can go

 - Each round players will be given the part of the foot that they have to dribble with e.g. Laces, sole, inside

Progression

- Allow the players to go in pairs to flip over the cones

- The cone must be flipped over using the players weaker foot

- If their ball touches a cone they are not allowed to turn a cone over and have to go straight back to the start

The focus for the session is dribbling at speed, while staying in control of the ball. This session is designed to be fun, social for the players all on the same team and again develop a sense of competitiveness.

Dribbling Option 10

Organization

- Split the group in to 4 equal groups

- Create a 20 x 30 area

- Place 2 groups on one side of the area and place the other two groups on the opposite side of the area

- Offset the groups so that they are not facing each other directly

- Each player gets a ball

- In front of each group place a cone 5 yards directly in front

- Place a halfway line directly through the middle of the area splitting the two sides where the players are horizontally

Activity

 -  On the coaches  call the player at the front of each line will dribble to the cone and turn, back to the start line and turn and accelerate over the halfway line

 - First player to get over the halfway line wins the point for their team

 - Progress to using different turns and different feet for each go

Progression

- The players on the same side are working together and so both players must be back before the other team to win the point

- Add gates at the opposite end to where the groups are starting. To get the point it is now the first player to get the ball through the gate following their two turns

The focus for the session is to improve turning techniques as well as acceleration and running with the ball. We are looking for players to be able to get low as they turn to enable them to burst out of the turn and accelerate in to the space. As coaches we are asking questions about the types of touches we use in certain situations, particularly if we have space or  if the area is tight.
