Method: Warm up 20 minutes

Coaching Points:

Begin with 2 minutes of stretching and jogging. Adding in stability and core work along with

Loosen out, get a feel for the pitch and the ball. Adding in movements and small drills that will then be incorporated into the main part of the session.

Drill 1: Start with a basic passing and moving drill, moving the ball from left to right and finding the deeper player for a bounce pass.

Method: Defending 2v3 and transitioning into 2v1

Coaching Points:

To get the players minds thinking and make them active on the transition we are going to start with a 3v2 transitioning into a 2v1 overloading the defenders. this will force them to make decisions quickly and make them tuned in. As you can see from the image the player that shoots the ball is the one defending immediately in the 2v1. In this case the number 4 has took a shot and now has to adjust and defend the oncoming 2 attackers.

Method: defending from the front focusing on protecting the wide areas.

Coaching Points:

Starting with the fixed goal the keeper will play out from the back with the blue team trying to score into one on the smaller goals out wide, the idea is to keep the defenders shifting from left to right and moving as a unit to prevent overloads. If a team scores they keep the ball, if the red team win it back it means they have won it high up the pitch and we want them to be aggressive and head straight towards goal, getting an early shot off or finding a through ball.

This is encouraging the players to take risk and gamble in high areas. It is a high passed session with intense press so we do this 4 times with coaching breaks in between.

Method: 9v9 Defenders defending and then transitioning into defence

Coaching Points: To begin we will have 5 rounds of 3 balls. Starting with the keeper of the blue team they will attack immediately with the defenders defending. Once the ball goes out of play the coach will call a players name to get the nearest ball and play it in, meaning the defenders have to transition and change their body position, adapting to where to ball is and trying to press and effect the play immediately. After 3 football have been in play there will be a 45 second rest and debrief before starting again.

This should take roughly 20-25 minutes with the hope the balls stay in play for a reasonable amount of time and the aim is to get the defenders to transition quickly after taking a shot or loosing possession of the ball. They will always be on the back foot with the other team starting with the ball.
