Screen 1 (5 mins)

Set Up: Are should be wide but shallow, replicating a width slightly smaller than the appropriate match field. Player may start with one ball at the start of each pattern but should progress to moving two balls as quickly as possible to ensure all players are working.

If numbers allow players should follow their pass to practice receiving in different positions.

Aim: 

Practice receiving with technique to allow switch of play. 

Type of pass to switch play. 

Basics combinations to switch play.

Coaching Points: 

Pull out from defender with open body shape.

Back foot control to allow to step into longer switch pass. 

Stop-pass technique for shorter but quicker switch pass.

Screen 2 (10 mins)

Set Up:

Add 2 CMs in to the middle of the shape. 1 CM works with each side. 

The back 3 & CM can work together in any pattern of play to switch the ball.

This can be replicated with other positions such as 3 midfielders & striker or 3 defenders & GK.

Aim:

Allow players to explore different ways of connecting to switch play.

Coaching Points:

Speed of play, switch has to be quick to be effective.

What positions does the CM need to take up? A. Between gaps to receive.

Screen 3 (25 mins)

Set Up:

Area size dependent on ability and number of players. Switch play between to target players to score. Progress to target players bringing ball into square and switching places with passer. 

Can start unopposed to practice and then make it team v team.

Aim:

To be able to receive the ball and switch play quickly when under pressure.

Screen 4 (25 mins)

Set Up:

Red Team scores by dribbling the ball through either gate. Blue Team scores in either goal. Change objectives every quarter.

Aim:To be able to switch play effectively to score points.

Coaching Points:

Where should the team attack when they win possession? A. The side of the field with the least defenders.

Players need to pick up a position to be a pivot and switch play.

Which positions in a game are in a good position to switch play? A. GK, CB, CM, CF.

Set Up: Scrimmage 

Make sure the playing are is wide enough to encourage switching play.

Make sure teams play a formation that allows them to switch play. Teams can be given time to discuss and make their own decision on this.
