Angled diving positions
We now move onto see the effect of the angled diving position

Overhead view
When we look at the overhead camera we see that although the goalkeeper has a great body shape he has a major problem with his positioning.
If the shot were to go to the goalkeepers right hand side (yellow line) he would actually dive into his own goal before the ball reaches him.
What must the goalkeeper do in order to stop this from happening?

Correction
In this view we can now see that the goalkeeper has moved forward so that his heels are in front of his near post (red line)
If our goalkeeper was to now dive to his right, he would be:
Square to the ball and diving forward
Safe and not in danger of hitting the post
Narrowing the angle to the ball making it harder for the striker to score (see next slide)

Down the line
What we can see from this slide are the various positions the goalkeeper could take if we followed the ideal line from the centre of the goal directly to the ball.
What are the advantages & disadvantages to each position?
1. The goalkeeper is standing on his line, this position will make the goal as large as possible to the striker allowing him to choose his position easily. Any dive to the right will end up with the goalkeeper diving into his own goal before the ball reaches him and a goal will be scored.
2. The goalkeeper has now moved forward so that his heels are just forward of his near post. If he was now to dive to his right hand side he would be safe from hitting his head on the post (very sore!!!). Any deflection would hopefully go out for a corner rather than into the goal. The goalkeeper has 'narrowed the angle' and has made the goal appear slightly smaller to the striker. The goalkeeper could react to any pass being made in the goal area by moving in a semi-circular pattern in front of the goal. Any attempt to shoot over the goalkeepers head could be deflected.
3. The goalkeeper is now mid way out to the striker and has 'narrowed the angle' even further, a dive to either side is getting easier, but, what if the ball goes over his head? What if the striker chooses to pass rather than shoot, could the goalkeeper react effectivley to the ball movement?
4 & 5. The goalkeeper has now moved out to the edge of the goal box, the 'narrowing of the angle' is at its least here and any save to the sides should be easier. Again, what about the ball going over the goalkeepers head? What if the ball is passed, can the goalkeeper move effectivley? Would the goalkeeper have enough time to react to a powerful shot?
All the questions above have to be dealt with by the goalkeeper in a very short space of time and the training React Goalkeeper Academy provides will give the goalkeeper all the answers for the correct decision making.

Down the line - 2
On this slide we have taken the strikers view and can see that the closer the goalkeeper is to the goal the larger the goal appears for the striker.
Could the goalkeeper in position 5 stop a ball going over his head?
Could the goalkeeper in position 2 make a dive to stop a shot to his left hand side?
What if the striker passes to a team-mate, could our goalkeeper make an effective movement and still get in front of the ball for a shot?

Set Up
Set up
We have the striker away to shoot at the goal and the goalkeeper is set, ready to receive the shot, we notice that the goalkeeper is:
Lifting his heels slightly off the ground
Feet are shoulder width apart
Knees are slightly bent
Knees. hips and shoulders all pointing towards the ball
Hands are in a central position
Head is behind the ball
Watching the ball all the times
Can you spot his mistake though??
