Combination 2 - No9 movement to open space
Movement from No9 to create space for 7 to run into to receive pass from 8. Any rebounds off the GK in position to score.
This combination can be repeated with No11 getting in.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Combination 3 - 3rd Man Run
9 drops in to draw defender out - combination with 11 for space for 10 to run into to score. No9 could even bounce pass with 8 to make the forward pass for 10.
Timing of 10s run a key factor - dont get caught offside.
What if: the blacks have too much success in these combinations (unrealistic)? allow one red MF to make recovery runs, blacks must now exploit the overload quicker to keep the overload.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Combination 4 - No9 Pinning Central Defender
Balled played into 9 who pins his body against the 5 protecting the ball ready for wide 7 to time his run to take the ball allowing him to dribble through while 9 is pinning back the 5. The combination between 9 and 7 can be a set, take, gazza - be creative with a disguise. No9 is key to this scoring opportunity and timing of the run from 7.

Block 2 - V1 Wide Overloading. Progression building up to the SSG
Organisation
Full width now opened up to encourage wide play overloads - 2v1s
7v7 + GK
Red No9 now introduced and the 4 dropping into the midfield central area
Explanation
Technical possession zone stays in (want players to be technically confident in possession), allow two black MFs to breakout into attacking area creating a 5v4 overload. Can the attackers find success down the channels? As block 1, use different combinations - give the defenders problems to solve and don't be predictable.
What if: cant find success down one channel? great opportunity to coach the Principle - Switch of Play: Understand when and how to switch the point of an attack based on the pressure applied from the opposition. Can the ball be transitioned to the other channel at speed and try to find success when defenders are heavily one sided.
Conditions, Challenges & Targets
Wingers breaking into the final 3rd must try to utilise the spare player/numerical advantage to create opportunities to combine, create and finish.
Limited touches play at a high tempo exploit the overload
First time finish or a managed countdown can be introduced to encourage realism
Limited touches/time for the opposition when in possession
Be creative and clinical in the final third
Quality of cross has to be at a good standard - give the 9 something to attack to score
Key Points
In possession:
Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)
Timing of movement
Use limited touches and move the ball quickly speed of the attack
Combination play
Final Pass
Finishing
Good first touch
Decision making
Out of possession:
Protect the middle

Block 2 - V2 Overlapping. Progression building up to the SSG
Good use of a 2v1 overload one against the 4 (8&10) and then in the final third 8&10 with an overlap to deliver a cross

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
SSG - Minimum 15mins
Possession square removed
Area - full width and box to box
Tapers introduced
Full size goals introduced with GKs for realism
7v8
Blacks 2CB, 3MFs, 3Fs (4-3-3) working back from 11v11 - no 2,3
Reds 3DFs and 3MFs 1F (3-5-2) working back from 11v11 - no 7,10,11
Explanation
Still looking to play and create overloads in possession. Focus on what was coached in the Blocks 1&2, coach wants to see player learning individually when in possession (comfortable, confident on the ball) and as a collective unit - combinations to create and score opportunities. Also adhere to the additional principle coached of Final Third (Understand when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch).
Play starts from black GK
Coach the blacks, manage the reds
Reds - adhere to the principles of defending the overload - Understand when and how to deal with numerical advantages the opposition have.
To create match realism -
attacking corners to be allowed
throw ins as normal
offsides in play
if red GK gains possession (open play or goal kick) - can the reds play out from the back, play forward quickly break lines to score? Allows blacks to now defend out of possession
Challenges, Conditions & Targets
Black Attackers:
In possession
Individual challenges - 7&11 play on the outside of red 2&3, try to drag them out of the central area allowing the 9 to have more space to run into while also creating a 1v1 with the central defender 5
What if: defending wide players were involved (7&11)? I'd expect my no10 to pop out and close down as he has two holding MFs (6&8)
Exploit the overload
Move the ball quickly, be confident on the ball, make good decisions, create scoring opportunities
How many goals can you score
No9 can you be clinical
Be creative in the final third
Blacks on a possession time limit to score
Red defenders:
Narrow and compact
Must keep good distances between them not allowing for gaps for to be exploited
Good communication as a defending unit - when to press, cover
Stop passing lines
Combine with the GK when in possession - can you play out from the back
Marking - goal side and ball side
When gaining possession - anticipate the transition, secure first pass, play forward quickly, support quickly, movement in to an attacking shape
Key Points
In possession:
Find the spare player
Exploit the numerical advantage
Make the pitch big - Width and Depth in Attack
Fast Passes and forward movement to create 2v1 or 3v2
Commit the opponent
Overlap/Underlap
Weight & accuracy of Final Pass
Out of possession:
Recognise the oppositions movement
Press quickly/defend the space
Protect the middle
Leave the furthest player

Welsh Way Principles
Understand when and how to exploit a numerical advantage against the opposition
Organisation
Width on the penalty box and half way between centre circle and other penalty box - 1 full size goal and 2 targets goals
Three Zones - possession area 35x25y, central and final 3rd
7v6 +GK
IP - Blacks 1 CB, 3MFs, 3Fs (4-3-3) working back from 11v11 - no 2,3,4
OP - Reds 3DFs and 3MFs (3-5-2) working back from 11v11 - no 7,9,10,11
Coach blacks and manage the reds
Two Blocks - 9mins
20mins practise with intervals
Explanation
Create an overload with the attacking team in the central area. Primarily with one MFs dribbling into the central possession zone to create the overload. The in-possession side is looking to play through the central zone into the striker for an attempt on goal. The defending side if they win the ball will be looking to create a shooting chance scoring in one of the two target goals.
Start with a walkthrough to layer both teams principles/objectives. Use coaching process when required - observe first, step in to
Block 1 - central overloading
Start with technical possession zone - improving individuals to be comfortable in possession with added pressure, 4v3 overload, use the numerical advantage -
Play starts with CB5 linking with midfield 3 players, can 6,8,10 breakout after successful passes (layer in number of passes throughout the session - start with 3 successful passes). On breaking out drive into the central area, exploit the space with the ball and create a 4v3 linking up with the front three (7,9,11) attacking with the overload to score.
Can different combinations be made to score (see other diagrams) - don't become predictable.
For realism, the edge of the box can be an offside line, otherwise the 9 could stand next to the GK
Here we can Coach a second Principle of play -
Final Third - Understand when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch.
Coach player movement, timing of runs and rotation to give the red defenders problems - be clinical in the penalty box
Reds - If possession is regained in technical zone (4v3) play forward to score in either target goal. If central area possession is regained 4,6,8 can join in creating their own overload to score on transition.
