This series of activities is designed to build passing skills - starting with accurate passing with little challenge, but still require quick play. The session progresses with more dynamic movement in restricted areas and leads to full field play to work the ball through connections. After the three sessions are finished, players should scrimmage on a full field.
Coaching points should focus on: defensively: moving to the ball and supporting primary defender; and offensively: playing quick passes and movement off the ball.

Red Devil Rover
Organization: Split up the players into three evenly numbered groups. If you have a large group (24+ players), split the overall group in half and then make three groups from each half using two setups (as shown above).
Setup: For one Red Rover playing area, you can use the length from the top of the 18 to the midfield stripe, and the width of the center circle. Setup three areas with cones, keeping each at an equal length so that you have three identical rectangular section on the one half of the field. Put one of the three teams in each rectangular area.
Objective: Play starts with the group closest to the 18-yard box. Players in that rectangle need to connect four passes before trying to play a pass through the players in the middle rectangle and connecting to the players in the third rectangle. Play continues between the two outside groups until the players are rotated.
Variations: Players can be rotated based on time intervals (such as every 3 minutes) or when the ball is won by the players in the center rectangle. Another variation is to allow one defender from the middle rectangle to challenge players in the rectangle that are in possession of the ball.

Red Devil Rover - Expanded
From the original setup used for a large group (24+ players), remove the blue and yellow cones. (The Blue cones separated the first and second rectangles of each half, as well as the two different playing areas that were separated at the center line; the yellow cones were used to indicate the width of the initial Red Devil Rover sessions.)
The rules are similar to Red Devil Rover, however, two teams are within the rectangular playing areas. The ball can start with players in red, closest to either 18-yard box. The players need to complete four passes and then try to connect a pass to the red team in the midfield rectangle. The blue team is free to challenge the red team in the rectangle. In this illustration, it shows a 4v4 in each rectangle. The overall goal is to advance the ball from one end to teammates in the middle rectangle and then through to teammates at the opposite side triangle.
Players should rotate triangles and 4v4 opponents every set time period (5 minutes).
Variation: Have two balls in play to held develop player awareness

Equipment: 12 cones, 3 agility sticks, 1 soccer ball (minimum)
Setup: create a circle with a 10 yard radius; use the cones to establish the circle boundary. Place agility sticks 3 yards apart in a triangular formation around the center of the circle.
Players on the outside possess the ball trying to send a through ball between the sticks. Players on outside should stay outside of the circle, but can go in or outside of the circle within reason to reason the ball or collect a bad touch. To pass the ball through the sticks, players must play it form outside the circle. Defenders stay relatively inside of the circle and try to intercept the ball or collect errant passes..
Defenders defend for 90 seconds and then rotate with two players on the outside of the circle.
