Welsh Way Principles ( Width and Depth, Risk taking, Final Pass, Quality of finish

Key Factors

The drill is centred around the players looking to attack the area the other side of the. The drill is unopposed to enchance the confidence in the group and enable them to play without fear.

Looking for depth of pass and quality of finish. Each element played with risk.

Organisation

Full size goal.

3 Manequins to create a fixed block and points of reference

Players queued equally behind on of 3 cones. Right, Central and Left. ALL Players have a supply of balls.

Coach will call Right Left or Centre. This player starts the move with a pass to one of the other 2 players or choose to drive beyond the white line before crossing or laying the ball into one of the other 2 players for a shot... The Coach should drive creativity and intensity of the drill, encourage variation.

Players once over the white line should cross or finish first time.

On return to the queue the players should rotate round the 3 positions.

Targets/Conditions/Challenges.

Points should be given for headers volleys, first time crosses with volleys. Targets can be added to the goal for accuracy on finishing.

Make it a team event with each group of 3 adding to a team score.

Organisation/Area Size

4 x 12 by 12 boxes all connected in a larger square of 24x24.

12 players split into 3 teams of 4. 4 Red, 4 blues and 4Black bibs.

Red Players are out of possession of the ball.

9 players in one box 4 red, 4 blue and 1 black, the other 3boxes have 1 black bibbed player in each box.

1 ball in play at a time

Explanation

The aim of the practice is to exploit the 5v4 overload in the game box utilising the spare player create the space in the box after achieving the number of passes set before switching the play to the free player in any of the other boxes.

How

The game takes place in one box at a time but can shift to any other box after a set number of passes have been completed. The game box is4 v 4 +1, after the set number of passes has been completed the in possession team finds the spare player in any of the other boxes and the game transfers to the selected box with the 4 red and 4 blue players transitioning to the new box. The black bibbed player always plays with the in possession side.

If the ball goes out of play, out of possession team take possession via a kick in. If the ball to the new box free player isn’t received coach plays the ball to the neutral player who starts play with the new in possession team.

Each section last 2 mins before the teams swap roles.

Conditions/Challenges and Targets

1.      Passing ranges required,

2.      Add competition but operating a ladder passing target. Achieve 4 passes, next box is 5. Loose the ball you can either return to4 or they start again from the last rung they achieved.

What s Ifs

1.      If the passing targets are continuously missed, one of the out of possession players can go and mark one of the other black bibbed players so the overload in greater.

Organisation
30 x 20 pitch Area with a line of cones dividing the pitch into 3rd's(this is for player orientation)4 goals in the centre of each of the end thirds to encourage the players to get the ball wide and score in the wide zones.

Players encourage to play quick fast football with mixture of passes that allow the space to be created for a switch pass and then the space to be exploited.
Challenges/Conditions and Targets
Players could be given time constraints to work the switch within to encourage the fast ball speed.Points give if the switch crosses 1 or 2 of the third line markers to encourage different range of passing.Extra points given for Muliple switches within one move.

General Practice - Focus on Breaking Lines

Key Factors - Looking to play through/around or over.

Organisation

Area size is 12m x 10m divided unequally into 5/2/5 by 2 rows of flat disks running across the area

3 teams of 3 players. 1 set of 3 will be defending the middle zone. The other 2 teams will be in possession at either end of the area. Balls to be fed in by the coach from the side if the ball goes out or the middle team wins.

Explanation

Session is set to work on breaking lines passes, no positional references are used. One of the Red groups will be in possession of the ball and tasked with playing though, over or around(as shown) the defending blue team to the other 3 red team players on the other side of the divide.

How

The in possession team will be tasked with moving the ball around to create the space and time to pass between around or over the defensive blue players. Key objectives are to draw the defending team out of the tight formation, make the area big so a pass can be achieved.
