Formation

1-4-1-3-2

Starting from the back of the formation, that is the keeper (1) Defenders (4) Holding mid (1) midfieders (3) forwards (2).

We have width (from right wideout to left wideout) amd the depth, (Forward to centerback). We want to use our width and depth to break the opponents lines and find the space in, around, and behind their lines. This means that all positions have to read the other team and their own teams position. The strength of the formation comes from our center.

If a team is comfortable with dropping into their defensive shape and not pressing I want a CB to move up next to the Holding Mid and create a second pivot player.

If a team is playing more conservatively and not pressing I want a CB to move up next to the Holding Mid and create a second pivot player. This creates a midfield presence that forces a team who runs a 4-3-3 to ignore the wings. The opponents fullbacks may press the wings when the ball is played into them. When they do they will open a gap in the back line. If the ball is played into the wideout and the fullback presses, the CAM and Forward could be open to quick passes into the third line that could create a chance.

Defensively

Defensively I want at least 8 behind the ball at all times. I want to condense the field and take the middle away from the teams that like to play there. Defensively we will smother their midfield and forwards. Force them to keep the ball wide where they can only cross or pass back into the middle.

i want the forwards pressing the ball when we lose it and delaying the build up so our midfield and back line can get set and in formation. I want the 4-4-2 shape at all times when we are out of possession. I want 8 behind the ball.

When we win the ball back I want the attacking formation wide and deep enough that we force a lot of 1v1 situations all over the field. Then our possession style play can start. Do not be afraid to trail the ball. Trail often. If the player is not being pressed I want you to move to open space to expose the half spaces that the opponents leave open.

If the opponent chooses to play back I want a high press to put pressure on the backline or whomever they trail to.

Press and cover

Press and Cover.

A high press can force a lot of mistakes. It can also leave your team vulnerable to a quick transition with so many of your players forward.

The key to a high press is to move into it quickly and force the keeper or one of the backs to play a long ball into the back line that can immediately be put right back into the attacking players.

Cover. I want one player delaying the ball while another moves in to make  2 v 1 cover. The key is to win the ball back and transition to attack immediately. This will work on any area of the pitch. The dangerous thing about it is leaving one player unmarked to double team one player. Your press and cover has to be perfect, ending in a turnover and transition to attack on goal.
