Aims/Objectives:
The red team will always start with the ball who will try and play out and beat the press from the blues. The aims of the red team is to play into the small goals out wide which simulate the wingers who are missing.
The blue team will press the red team and then try and score.
Coaching Points:
Press as a team / units (Intensity)
When and where to press?
Approach and body shape when pressing - Which side to force play?
Make play predictable -Dictate play (inside or outside)
Triggers(Bad touch, poor pass, body shape, received the ball on their front foot)
Hard to beat
Distances between units
Dominant in 1 v 1's
Primary Players (Who?) - On the ball (9,7,11), Around the ball (10,8,4), Away from the ball (6/5).
9 - Prevent the ball being switched. Curve run when approaching. Engage when CB's touch is forward or wide.
7/11 - In a position where they can see both the ball and the full back. Not tight but, not too far away from the full back. Engage when the full back receives the ball (try to force backwards).
10/8 - Can you apply pressure when the ball goes into the CB? If the ball goes into their CM, can you pinch? If not, pester?
4 - Can you stop their 10 from turning/playing forwards (force backwards). Cut off the pass to the number 9.
6/5 - Think about the distances between the units. Stay tight or drop off the number 9. Pinch or pester?
What? - To win the ball back as quickly as possible. The whole team together.
Where? - Final third or as high as possible
When? - As soon as possible
How? - Look for the triggers. Intensity. As a team/unit - All to prevent the opposition from getting up the pitch or switching play.
Why? - Closer to the goal when possession is regained. Force the opposition into mistakes. Just to win the back. Also, to develop understanding of a high press (Individual & team/units roles).
Pictures:
When the ball is played to one of the opposition's centre backs, how should the 9, 7 and 11 should be and why?
If the ball gets played into midfield, where should the midfield 3 be in relation to ball and the opposition's position?
If the opposition plays into their 9, how should the 5/6 do and how the whole team react?
