Dive: 
  • roll from knee to hip to shoulder
  • low hand absorbs the pressure
  • high hand hugs it like a stuffy

 

Always:  Hugging that ball will stop play.

Moving and Following Through

MOVING AND FOLLOWING THROUGH (DEFENSE)

 

Objective: Players learn to keep moving after ball contact, thinking about their next objective and linking ideas together.  Player also expands goal kick plays out of 'booting it.'

 

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

 

 

  • 3 cones (at field player starting positions and position C)
  • 3 balls (at keeper, coach, and position C)

 

 

EXERCISE:

 

  • Player at A runs to receive goal kick from keeper at B, receives and passes to one receiver.
  • Player continues to C, where they pass the ball to other receiver.
  • Coach serves the ball to position D, where Player receives and dribbles it toward the receivers.
  • Play this, then reverse it.
PROGRESSION:
  • Coach calls out destinations for the passes while Player is in motion.

Equipment needed: 

 

  • 1 ball for every 2 players
  • 4 cones

 

 

Key Defending Principles: BLAMO!

 

B: Watch the BALL (not the player)

L: Get LOW

A: Key defender should be ARM'S length from the opponent

M: MOVE your feet to match the attacker's direction

O: Watch out for OOOPS mistakes (bad touches, etc.)

 

 

EXERCISE: 

 

  • Players face off across the line.  Each blue player has a ball and handles it at the line.  Red players mark, practicing BLAMO.  Then, switch sides and repeat.
  • Then, allow defenders to try to steal the ball.  If ball is stolen, roles immediately reverse.

 

PROGRESSION 1:
  • Same rules, but players can move vertically as well as horizontally.  

 

PROGRESSION 2: 

  • Back on the line. Only one ball.  Blue team can pass back and forth.  Red team should be comets of the ball (press and cover).  No stealing! Blue passes, red shifts.  Then, players switch sides and repeat.
  • Then, let defenders try to steal.

 

PROGRESSION 3: 

  • Offense moves in from half line, making passes and trying to score.  Defense presses and covers.
  • Scoring: offense scores: 1 pt.  Defense dribbles over the red line: 1 pt.
