Description

Organisation

Field is a simple set up, dependant on numbers either using one or two goals available, split between one group or two. Cones laid out to mark where shots will be taken from. For a foundation level session this works the basics well and is an enjoyable session for those working on the most enjoyable part of the game in scoring goals. Quick rotations and transitions allow for maximum ball rolling time and stopping interventions with the whole group, bar opening demonstration, shouldn't been many if at all. Having players in a small wait allows time to jump in with individual interventions. With the set up between technical and skill remaning the same there is no need for moving equipment bar maybe gathering balls up. If in use of both goals also this allows for another quick transition into the relevant small-sided game. For this 3,2,1 a shooting game based on maximum reward for more risk with shots, is fun for especially the younger age groups. Promoting the confidence to get shots off and take risk where maybe there was none before. Bringing a small ball or futsal ball in at the end for next goal wins adds an air of competition and excitement also. This should also add in as many shots as possible as teams want to try and win the game.

Skill (20 mins)

Organisation:

Same set up as the techincal part of the practice. This time however there is opposition coming from behind the goal. Goalkeeper can be added if numbers allow and is relevant. If not just a defender plus some cones in the corners will suffice for this. Bring an element of 1v1 realism into the game and decision making on when to shoot and correct angle of approach.

  • Ball is fed out from player behind the goal into one of the three cones available for attacker
  • Once the ball is played, the second player next to the goal was run in and act as a live defender
  • Using the information available from the cone the ball is received at and defenders positioning, attacker must make a decision on shot
  • Either take the defender on to allow for an easier finish or shoot earlier
  • Aim for the corners as guided by cones placed into the goal

Key Techincal Detail

  • Decision making on the ball
  • Use the defenders body shape to guide your decision on shot
  • Ask for the ball at the cone you most prefer
  • What type of finish to use
  • Finesse or power
  • Aiming for the corners
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
  • Time limit
  • Add goalkeeper if available
  • Use more points for shots into the cones in the corners
  • Double points for weak foot finish
  • Can they aim for top and bottom corners

Small-Sided Game (15 mins)

  • Field is brought in and played at 5v5, or whatever numbers you are working with organised evenly.
  • No GKs during the game, game is played purely on getting more shots on goal
  • Defenders must work to block shots or make the angle harder to score from
  • Cones placed in the corners for double points
  • Field is split into thirds, each containing a different number of points available

Key Technical Detail

  • Angle of approach
  • Type of shot dependant on where on the pitch
  • Balance before hitting the ball
  • Connection with the ball
  • Working the ball between the team to allow the best chance of scoring
  • As many shots taken as possible

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Goal from own defensive third = 3 goals
  • Goal from middle third = 2 goals
  • Goal from the attacking third = 1 goal
  • If goal goes in the corners between cones, worth double points
  • Can introdice smaller or futsal ball at the end as "golden snitch" which is next goal wins
