Description

What:

  •  Improve the players' tactical knowledge of playing out from the back

Who:

  • Primarily Back 4, CM's, Wide Mid's

Where:

  • Defending 3rd/ Middle 3rd

When:

  •  Winning the ball back in the defensive third and transitioning into attack. Trying to move the ball quickly and find the options when the space is available in front of them, or switching the point of attack.
  • Goal Kicks

Why:

  • Players need to understand how to adapt to pressure in the defensive third, in order to transition into attack. Player movement, quick decision-making, and proper passing technique are primary skills being worked on.

Introduction (10 mins)

Organization:

  • 5v2 Rondos
  • 2 Boxes, 15x15 (adjust size according to Progression/Regression)
  • Balls in the middle of both boxes for easy access
  • Players in middle hold bibs for quick transitioning from defense to offense

Instructions:

  • 5 Players keep possession away from 2 Defenders
  • If a defender wins the ball, then they switch out with the offensive player who lost possession
  • Minimal pausing in between defense/offense switching - get the ball back in play as quickly as possible
  • Unlimited touches for the first few minutes
  • Always have an offensive player in middle to act as "Center-Mid"

Techinical Coaching Points:

  • Head up, to see where space is/who's open
  • Using inside of foot to pass, hips square to target
  • Deception, using fakes to confuse defense
  • Offensive communication - saying "man-on" when teammate is under pressure
  • Defensive communication - saying "I got press, you got cover"
  • Defense - cutting off passing lanes

Tactical Coaching Points:

  • Thinking ahead of time - knowing where you're thinking about passing it before you receive the ball
  • Try to stay on sides rather than corners, in order to have the maximum space to move
  • Center-mid's job is to create triangles and always be an option to link up play- at the very least, this will also create more space for the outside players

Progressions & Regressions:

  • P: 2-touch
  • P: 1-touch
  • R: Make box bigger
  • R: 1 Defender
