Warm up (no ball) (5 mins)

Warm-up: No ball (5 minutes)

Players follow the line of their cones. When player 1 gets to the first cone, player 2 goes. Repeat with every player in the line. Perform each of the dynamic warm-up movements below.

1) Jog x2

2) run x2

3) Open gate to close gate x2

4) High kick to lunge x2

5) Backwards to 1st cone, forwards to start, turn and sprint to end x2

Technical: 1v1 defending (15 mins)

Warm-up: with a ball Technical practice, Individual defending (15 minutes)

Set up:

Grids of 30x10 yards

Players split equally at each side of the grid as depicted.

Play:

  • Start with a pass at one side of the grid. The receiver tries to dribble to the other side
  • Orginal passer acts as a defender and pressures the ball
  • The objective is to get the ball to the other side; the attacker uses skill to beat the defender, pressuring and attempting to win possession
  • Each player will end the round at the other side of the grid
Coach/Observe:
  • Pressure; close down quick
  • Body position; get side on
  • Patience & delay; don't over commit
  • Force; show the opponent a path and force them into it

4v2 (+1) Rondo (20 mins)

4v2+1 Pressing Rondo (20 minutes)

This is a high-intensity drill with defenders aiming to force mistakes by pressing the opponent hard


Set-Up

  • Grids of 40x20 split in half (2v2 + 1) in each half
  • 1 ball per grid
  • 1 neutral per grid (pink player)
Play
  • The 2 whites plus the neutral try to combine 3 passes against the pressing blues
  • On the fourth pass, switch the play to their teammates in the other box for 1 goal
  • Two new defenders press on the switch, and the game repeats
  • If the defenders win the ball, they transition to offense and try to combine three passes, then switch
  • The defending must have two defenders outside the grid at all times
Coach/Observe:

  • High Pressure: close down quickly
  • Cover: the second defender should be close to the pressing defender
  • Delay and Force: Make the opposition play backwards and force the play into a tight area
  • Body position: side on, showing only one option

11v11 conditioned game (30 mins)

11v11 Pressing activity (30 minutes)


Set up:

  • Play on two-thirds of the field
  • 11 vs. 11 normal FIFA rules 
  • one ball active
  • 6 stations are set up with balls around the side and ends of the field
Play:
  • coach calls out a number, and the Whites start an attack with a ball from that area
  • The defending team (blues) must transition and set up the press
  • Whites try to play out to score a goal against the blues
  • Blues press to force the play and win possession. If successful, the blues attack the Whites goal
Coach/Observe:

  • High Pressure: close down quickly
  • Cover: the second defender should be close to the pressing defender
  • Delay and Force: Make the opposition play backward and force the play into a tight area
  • Body position: side on, showing only one option
  • Press together to cut out passing lanes
  • Communicate from back to front (GK through forwards).

Make it easier; Whites are on limited touches


End the session with a Full sized 11 v 11 game (20 minutes)
