Dealing with #10

Specific - Defend breaking lines


Set Up

  • 25min = 4 x 5 minute blocks
  • 6v6+GK
  • Half pitch with 1 full sized goal and 3 mini goals
  • Coaching position - Start off within the practice, discuss with #10 his positioning and set challenges to show feet to receive passes
  • After first block give 10 independence and coach from behind goal to judge defensive red positions and evaluate their screening, adapt as necessary

Drill 

  • Reds steal off 10 = 1 point
  • Reds cut off pass into 10 = 1point
  • Reds play out into mini-goals = 1point
  • 5 blues passes not into 10 = 1point (GK to keep score)
  • Blues pass into 10 = 1 point
  • 10 shot on target = 1 point
  • 10 assist = 2 points
  • 10 goal = 3 points (Coach to keep score)

Conditions

  • Throw ins from wide areas
  • After shot ball restarts with blue 6/8
  • Blues have 10 seconds to score, if reds steal ball they have 7 seconds to play out and score in mini goals
  • Blue #10 can only play within the width of the penalty area

Challenges

  • Can red 6/8 screen and shuffle to prevent passing lanes into 10? 
  • What would this look like if ball is with blue double pivot vs blue wingers
  • If ball makes it in to 10, can reds prevent him from turning?
  • Introduce pressing triggers to stop the pass before it goes in to 10 - role of FBs to "jump" out quickly, show outside and cut off central passing lanes
  • Encourage one red in the double pivot to go man-man marking
  • Duty of the red screen to force ball wide and protect central areas

SSG - Holding on to win (Key Attacking & Defensive principles)


Set Up

  • 9v9+GK's
  • Edge of 18 yard box to the end of the pitch
  • 25m = 2 x 10 minute blocks
  • Red team starting 1-0 up
  • SSG = Removed blue FBs and red wingers to encourage reds to play direct when they attack

Drill

  • Ball out over normal pitch lines = throw in/goal kick
  • Ball out in tapered area = restart from Blue GK with goal kick

Targets

  • Reds = Manage where blues have possession and keep ball away from dangerous areas
  • Keep possession and run down clock (Switch play to tire opposition)
  • Look to counter attack and score
  • Blues = Cause reds problems by attacking dangerous areas with focus on central zones
  • Retain possession and move reds side to side (Patient build up to eventually break lines)
  • Attempt to win the game

Red Team


Defence:

  • Back 4 = Defensive unit to stay compact and go up and down the pitch together. Ball goes back to blue GK - squeeze pitch up to centre circle
  • Midfield 3 = Screen the defence and protect central areas, body shape to force play round the outside and prevent split passes breaking line through the midfield
  • 9 = When ball is with blue defenders, force them to play wide or across to other CB. Cut off passing lane in to Blue 6 and aim to direct play, once ball passes them aim to cut off passes back to ball side defender to remove safe option for blues in possession.

Attack:

  • Back 4 = Ball side full back invert into midfield, opposite side FB tucks in to make back 3
  • Midfield 3 = 6 & 8 become double pivot ahead of inverted FB which frees the 10 to support red 9
  • 9 = Make pitch big, drag defenders towards own goal and open space for reds to play in to - no need to go too attacking as they are already winning.

Encourage players to manage risk themselves and discuss decision making after first 10m block

Using the assistant coach

  • Encourage the assistant coach to manage to blue team (Starting off 0-1 down)
  • This means they can cause different problems you yourself have not prepared and allow you and your team to solve problems in real time
