Dribbling End Zone (10 mins)

Dribble & Breakout

Objective

  • To develop close control and dribbling skills using different surfaces of the foot.

  • To improve decision-making and awareness in tight spaces.

  • To accelerate with the ball effectively when transitioning into space.

  • To build confidence in using turns, tricks, and explosive movement with the ball.

Setup:

    • A central small square for close dribbling.

    • A white and a red end zone.

    • Each player has a ball and dribbles inside the small square.

  • Phase 1 – In the Square:

    • Players dribble inside, avoiding collisions.

    • Focus on close control, using all surfaces of the foot.

    • Turns and tricks encouraged.

  • Phase 2 – Breakout (on coach’s call):

    • On shout of "Red/White", players explode out of the square.

    • Aim: race to the relevant end zone and return quickly.

    • Emphasise using laces for speed and pushing the ball ahead.

Challenges & Conditions

    • Can we dribble using only inside/outside?

    • Can you do your favourite trick while keeping control?

  • Speed & Space Awareness:

    • Can we recognise when space opens up to go faster in the square?

  • Breakout Race:

    • Who can reach and return from end zone the fastest wins a point?

Progressions

  • Add passive defenders in the square to increase pressure.

  • Add active defenders to protect the end zone during the breakout phase.

  • Time-based: How many turn can do in 30 seconds?

Regressions

  • Increase the size of the central square to give more space.

  • Increase rest interval

Coaching Points

In the Square (Close Control)

  • Keep the ball close—small, frequent touches.

  • Vary the surface of the foot—inside, outside, sole.

  • Head up—constant scanning to avoid others.

  • Use turns to escape pressure.

  • Stay balanced and light on feet.

Breakout to End zone (Explosive Dribble)

  • Get the ball out of your feet—bigger first touch.

  • Use laces to push the ball into space.

  • Shift to running stride quickly.

Skill Workout 1 v 1 (10 mins)

Drill Overview: 1v1

Setup

  • Add 2 x pop-up goals in designated shooting zones.

  • One blue player (passer) and one red player (attacker) begin each round.

  • A defender starts opposite the attacker.

How It Works:

  • Blue player passes the ball to the red attacker.

  • The attacker must take on the defender and score in a pop-up goal.

  • If the defender wins the ball, they can score

Coaching Points & Conditions:

Attackers:

  • Can you use a skill move to beat the defender (e.g., step-over, body feint)?

  • Attack with speed and purpose – use space and momentum.

  • Aim to unbalance the defender by changing direction and pace.

  • Time limit  to score once receiving the ball – encourages quick, decisive play.

Defenders:

  • Can you close the space quickly and deny access to the shooting zone?

  • Stay low, balanced, and patient – don’t dive in.

  • Transition quickly when winning the ball – look to counter fast into the end zone.
