5v2 Rondo (20 mins)
5v2 Rondo
8x8/9x9 area
Aim: Keep possession from the 2 blues. Can attackers attract defenders towards the ball before passing the ball to a free player?
Can we play short firm passes to pull defenders out of position and exploit the areas they've vacated?
Coaching points:
Reinforce the need to receive with open hips to be able to move left or right, and not stay facing the same way the ball came from.
Players on the outside must position themselves to be able to receive the ball.
By having an open body shape this will help make one touch passes more accurate as players will be better balanced.
Movement off the ball by players on the side must be well timed otherwise the practice will break down. Don't be standing waiting for the ball to come to you move in and out to take defenders away from line of pass.
Player in the middle can help bring the ball from one side to the other by linking play.
Pass must be played to the receiving players back foot.
Firm passes will aid the ball reaching its player.
Slow passes will entice defenders to press. If this occurs up the tempo to get out the other side and break line of press.
Progressions: Challenge the middle player to take a touch in order to play between the lines.
if you don't want to count passes you can give a goal every time the ball is played into the middle player and through another side.
Points system: one point for 5 passes around the outside and 2 points if the ball is played through the middle player and out to another player.
Remember to condition the defenders and offer a points system to keep them motivated when chasing possession. 1 point every time they win the ball by anticipating a pass and 2 points if they can win the ball and dribble out of the area.
