SSG / Defending the Final Third / Out of Possession:
Mode: Small-Sided Game SSG (15 minutes)
Welsh Way Principles
Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses / shots & protect space centrally in the defensive third.
Organisation / Area Size:
75yd x 50yd with flats/tapers at the defending end (BLUE defensive area).
Playing 9v9 including 2 GK's - (Adding 1 player to the REDS & 2 players to the BLUES).
Play 3 x 5 minute periods with 1 minute breaks.
How:
The coach will continue to work with the ONE team (REDS) and make sure they carry on preventing the BLUE opposition team from scoring in the final third.
BLUE GK will start play off at all times as I want the BLUES attacking as much as possible from all dead balls and goals scored.
If the REDS gain possession they will be looking to counter attack by breaking lines and scoring in the opposition goal.
The BLUES will continue to attack the RED team and get into the 'final third' as soon as possible to create and score a goal.
Instruct the BLUE DM's/FB's (WHITE/YELLOW) bibs to get forward and create 2 v 1's and overlaps, this will create problems for the RED team giving the coach the opportunity to coach the RED team in defending as a UNIT in the final third to stop any crosses.
10-15 Defender narrow,tight and deep.
15-20 Pressure earlier and defend the 2 v 1.
20-25 Defend a little higher (good practice for catching opposition off-side)
Explanation:
The BLUE team in possession need to work the ball quickly from their GK and get it out wide to their wingers. They can also play forward to one of their 2 CM's who can play a high crossfield ball into the final third. This will give the coach an opportunity to continue coaching the REDS in defending the final third properly, keeping a tight and structured defensive unit.
When the RED team win the ball they must counter attack swiftly, breaking lines and trying to score.
RED team are 4-3-1+GK Added 1 player in CM.
BLUE team are 2-4-2+GK Added 2 players in CM & GK.
Challenges,Conditions & Targets:
- Attacking team (BLUE) have 20 seconds to create, cross or shoot on goal.
- REDS to attempt to STOP all attacks through the centre of the pitch.
- REDS to get 3 points for a goal,BLUES get 1 point, this will give the BLUES more energy to attack and get into the final third.

Welsh Way Principles
Understand when and how to minimise space, deal with crosses / shots & protect space centrally in the defensive third.
Organisation / Area size:
60yd x 50yd.Final third of the pitch will be coned/tapered across.
Play 8 v 7 (RED team have GK) -
Coaching RED team - Managing BLUE team.
RED team playing 4-2-1 + GK.
BLUE team playing 2-3-2.
RED team (defending out of possession) RCB,LCB,RFB,LFB,LCM.RCM,CF + GK.
BLUE team (managed opposition) RCF,LCF,LW,RW,CM,LDM & RDM.
Playing 2 x 4 minute periods with 2 minute break.
Explanation:
The opposition in possession have to get the ball into the final third as quickly as possible. The REDS first task is to force the attack wide and away from the middle areas of the pitch.Once the ball has gone wide pressure the ball fast and quick to block any cross and win the ball back.
If the RED team win the ball they must counter attack by 'breaking lines' and scoring inone of the 2 mini-goals.
Teams score by:
1. REDS by scoring into either of the mini-goals - 3 points a goal.
2. BLUE by scoring in the main goal with GK - 1 point a goal if scored from a cross in the final third,3 points a goal if from 'breaking lines' pass.
How:
The coach is to work with ONE team only (RED),out of possession. The REDS will be coached in how to 'Defend the final Third'
When the REDS have possession they won't be coached but they will look to 'Break Lines' on the counter attack.
The coach will manage the opposition (BLUES) to attack quickly and to get the ball wide or through the middle into the final third to create REALISM in the session.
The coach/spare player will deliver the ball from the defensive back line of the BLUE team.
Conditions,Challenges & Targets:
- There are time constraints on both teams - REDS so that they are encouraged to win the ball back and counter attack and BLUES so that they don't hold on to the ball for long periods.
- BLUES have 20 seconds to create, cross and/or shoot in the final third.
- REDS to stop all attacks through the centre of the pitch.
- REDS on winning the ball back score in either of the mini-goals.
- Target for the BLUE team is to score in the main goal in the final third through 'breaking lines' around, through or over the REDS.
- The 2 BLUE team DM's to have YELLOW/WHITE bibs on to highlight them. The DM's will give you problems that you want to solve.Manage them from 1-4 minutes as FB's/DM's..then from 5-8 minutes encourage them to give you and the RED team problems by creating an overload 2v1 scenario against the RED FB's.
