Specific practice / Breaking lines / in possession
Welsh way principles - Playing through, around and over
Understand when and how to play through , around or over the opposition based on the type of pressure applied.
Organisation / Area Size
60 x 30 m
7 v 7 with 1 common player. 6 x Red, 6 x Blue and 1 x Yellow bibs
3 x 3 min blocks
Designated area behind both goals for footballs. All the corners will have a tapered line as reference for the pitch.
All the players can move around pitch while maintaining the playing principles and keeping to their original specific practise positions.
Session Details
The objectives of the SSG are the same as the specific practice to play through, around or over the opposition to score. The team in possession can use the common player in yellow to bounce the ball off who is limited to 2 touches. I will be coaching the REDS making sure that they follow what we worked on in the specific drill. The Blues will be managed. Once a team scores the opposition will restart from their goalkeeper.
Challenge, conditions & Targets
1. Players must try to break the lines of the opposition by threading split passes through the central area. Each team will score 3 goals for splitting the opposition players, 2 for playing over and 1 goal for playing around.
2. Limited touches in possession.
3. Time limit to score
Key points
In possession
1. Make the pitch big (Width and depth)
2. Use limited touches and move the ball quickly
3. Try to play in ares that allow you to see both ends of the pitch.
4. Play through, around ot over the opposition based on the pressure on the ball.
Out of possession
1. Stay Narrow
2. Prevent split passes
3. Protect the space in behind
4. Block passing lanes

Midfield + common players can move around the central area, the CB for both teams are locked into their boxes as servers for the specific part of the practice. The strikers can intercept a pass to the CB but can't enter the shaded box may also be used to block the pass to opposite CB.
Session Details
Start off from the keepers to the CB (Servers) the objective is to play through, over or around the opposition in the central area before transferring the ball to the ST who can score in a 1 v 1 with the keeper in a managed countdown to promote realism. The CB and the common player will be restricted to 2 touch max. Both teams MUST play through the midfield/common player before transferring to the ST. CB can't play direct to the ST.
Both teams are working on the main principle of play but I will coach the RED team and manage the Blue team. If the Blue team are having more success with the ball they will be managed with conditions such as time limit to score, number of touches or limited touches.
