Description

Specific; Breaking Lines 10 minutes

Welsh Way Principles- Playing through, around and over

Understand when and how to play through, around and/or over the opposition based on the type of pressure applied.

Organisation:-

Footballs to be placed in each goal to allow GK to distribute quickly if shot is missed etc. Spare footballs to be placed in nest near coach.

Area Size 70m x 30m (this may vary due to age/ability of the players and the physical demands required)

Play 9v9 + 2 GKs.

MF players can move around the practice as directed by the coach based on playing principles, the centre backs for both the blue/red team are locked into the boxes as servers for the specific part of the practice.

NOTE:- Other players that will take place in the SSG to follow specific practice are with another coach working on some individual specific session that's relevant to 'breaking lines' in preparation for SSG.

Explanation:-

Red team are coached and Blue team are managed. The objective of the team in possession is to try and play through, around or over the opposition players and score by transferring the ball into their #9 for 1v1 with GK. This 1v1 with GK is managed by a countdown to mimic the game. The GK then distributes a ball into a centre back and play restarts.

Use overloads wide and over the pitch to get around defence and get ball into No.9 for a chance on goal.

The GK then distributes a ball to defender and play restarts.

If Blue win possession at any point, they have to attack and score. Time will be managed by the Coach with emphasis on a quick transition. If they score or breaks down, start again with Reds.

Conditions, Challenges & Targets:-

1.    Players must try to break the lines of the opposing team by threading split passes through opposing players in midfield. Score 3 goals for splitting opposing players and 1 goal for playing around.

2.    Encourage limited touches in possession to move opposition and create and exploit space.

3.    Initially, the Reds must play through or around the opposition and can't play direct /over to start.

4.    Time limits for 1v1 with GK.

5.    Opposition managed to press, drop off, protect middle as required.

1stBlock-Blues to defend narrow, stop split passes so Red must play around the opposition.

2ndBlock-Blues to defend wide and stop Red from playing/ scoring around. Reds to look for solutions and play through, quickly with direction and purpose. Can a defender move forward to create overload centrally?

3rdBlock-Blues to push high; Reds have option of clipping ball into space for No.9 to have 1v1.

Specific; Breaking Lines- 10 minutes

PlayingAround:-

1.    Oppositionwill press the ball and not worry about width & depth- creates spacecentrally.

2.    Openbody position- player can see pitch.

3.    Redteam to move ball quickly, less touches- don’t allow opposition to regroup& organised.

4.    Wideplayers to be brave on ball, good first touch. Can they drive past defence toget around them.

5.    Wideplayers always in a position to receive ball and move forward.

6.    Passingtriangles and angles to get around.

PlayingThrough:-

Opposition- Protect middle, stay narrow andmake difficult to play through for Reds.

1.    Can CMs keep ball to encourage press and play through to striker or other midfielders in creating angles.

2.    Good body position; receive ball away from opposition and progress forward. Protect the ball and play forward quickly.

PlayingOver:-

Opposition to press the ball and leave space for ball over the top.

1.    Good weight, height and speed on ball.

2.    Defenders will try to stop the ball at source by pressing.

Key Points:-

In possession

Play through, around or over the opposition.

Make the pitch big (Width and Depth).

Use limited touches and move the ball quickly.

Entice defenders to mark close and leave space to move into.

Head up, play forward decisively.

Receive ball on half turn.

Out of possession (Opposition/Managed)

Stay narrow.

Prevent split passes.

Force wide.

Protect the space in behind.

Protect central areas.

Break passing lines.

Press when appropriate. Retreat into group.

Interventions:-

Use Bibs to show players; then into Walk Through

Coaching Process

WhatIfs:-

1.    No.9 drops deeper- Does CB follow? Creates space for wide players to run onto ball over the top. If CB stays in position, ball played into No.9 who can turn and run at goal with options wide also.

2.    If CB are marking No.9 or CM marking Red midfield, go wide and carry forward.False Fullback?

3.    If playing over the top, CB may drop deep to over space; creates gaps centrally to exploit- Reds wide players may come inside to get onto the ball or CB creates extra player centrally to create overload.

4.    Movementis key- If Opposition No.9 doesn’t press Red CB, CB to break lines and travel with the ball.

5.    If Blues press CM, recycle possession; play around/ wide or over the top.

What can break my session?

1.    Slow passing- side to side with no purpose. Allows opposition to regroup & organise. Encourage progressive, decisive passing.

2.    Opposition having too much of the ball. Time limit and start with Red GK.

SSG- 15 minutes

Organisation:-

Footballsto be placed in each goal to allow GK to distribute quickly if shot is missedetc. Spare footballs to be placed in nest near coach.

Area Size 70m x 30m (this may vary due toage/ability of the players and the physical demands required)

Play 9v9 + 2 GKs.

Realism to full size game is essential.

Explanation:-

The objective of the team in possession isto try and play through, around or over the opposition players to score. Theteam in possession to try to move the opposition out of position to exploitspace and break lines. Once a team has scored play restarts with the opposition. The SSG MUST reflect the 11v11 game.

Conditions, Challenges & Targets:-

Players must try to break the lines of the opposing team by threading split passes through, around or over opposing players.

'What If' scenario-Animation not situation.

1.    If CF screens DCM and other 3 CM man mark in midfield. Play around and across the other side.

2.    Defender presses middle so becomes 3v3. The ball is clipped over the top to create 1v1.

3.    Defensive midfielder does not press but marks 50/50 on overload. Attacking midfielder pulls wide and carries the ball until defender is drawn in thus creating overload.

4.    Defending striker cuts off pass to attacking midfielder. The ball is squared to adjacent defender to play out or defender travels with ball while midfielder pulls wide to create space for pass.

Last 5 minutes; Scenario:-

Last 5 minutes of a Champions League final; Blues are 1-0 up and will form a low block, staying narrow and compact without pushing up the pitch. Blue No.9 will drop in onto Red No.10 to stop space through the middle.

Coach the moment with Reds- want to see Reds fluid movement, out to in and stay wide to create 2v1s.
