This session focuses on creating width and delivering into the box, developing players’ ability to stretch the defence and attack key scoring areas. Organized in a 1-3-5-2 (Blue) against a 1-4-2-3-1 (Red), players are encouraged to create wide overloads, deliver varied crosses, and make second-man runs into the “prime assist zone” (cut-back area near the byline). Emphasis is placed on timing of movement, separation from defenders, and finishing actions.
Research shows that a 60%-70% of goals originate from passes played from wide areas, particularly cut-backs from the byline into central zones (Paul Bradley et al., 2014). Additionally, exploiting width to disorganize defensive structures increases the likelihood of creating high-quality scoring opportunities (Javier Fernández et al., 2019).
