CAM's overload

Organisation: CAM's Movement to Create Overload on the Wing

Explanation:

In this formation, the team will always have two players out wide, and the CAM can move out wide and create an overload where needed. For example, assuming the ball is on the right-hand side, the CAM can move into the right inside channel and the LM into the left inside channel to ensure there are always three players in the middle channels.

The RM will shift further toward the sideline and play more like a winger, which will allow the team to play as wide as possible. Meanwhile, the LWB can push up and stick out wide on the other wing to stretch the opposition. This formation offers great flexibility in attack and the ability to create chances from different angles.

Building up play from the back

Organisation: Building up play from the back

Explanation:

To start, the two CBs split to the corner or side of the box on either side. One of the DMs, usually the holding DM, comes short to collect the ball while the fullbacks push higher up the pitch to stretch the opposition's press. The AM (no.10) drops deep to create another passing option. The CB can directly pass to the WB on his side or the AM if possible, or pass to the supporting DM who can transfer the ball to the WB on either side or the AM.

The two DMs position themselves on a staggered line to create opportunities for the team to move the ball up the pitch. However, it can be dangerous if the CB with the ball tries to pass directly to the CB on the other side across the middle area from the box when being high pressed up the pitch. In this scenario, it is safe and prudent for the CB to pass to the receiving DM. If the DM cannot turn, he can pass back to the GK to restart or pass to the other CB, who can then pass to the WB on his side.

Explanation:

The diamond shape is a common structure in this formation, created between the CB, fullback, and two CDMs. One CDM occupies the tip of thediamond while the other moves in parallel to the fullback, providing support incase of press and creating an overload in possession. This shape also opens upopportunities for progressing up the pitch. For instance, the AM can dropdeeper to switch the ball to the midfielder, supporting fullback on the otherside, or the CF.

CAM's Movements

Organisation: CAM's Movements

Explanation:

The CAM in a 4-2-3-1 formation plays a crucial role in the team's attacking strategy. One important aspect is their ability to switch positions with the CF, with the latter dropping deep into midfield and the former cutting in behind on the overlap. This requires a good understanding between the two players.

Moreover, the CAM is essential in creating overloads in the opposition's half. As one of the CDMs operates as the box-to-box midfielder, the AM will typically play from side to side, linking up with the wingers and the striker, and finding players on the overlap. By doing so, the AM can create space and opportunities for the team to move up the pitch and attack.

Explanation:

The fullbacks are required to support both the attack and defence and will usually move high up along side the AM. They will also have a good link up play with the wide midfielders.

Scenario 1- The Fullbacks are wide, the wider midfielders will move into the half space or cut in behind.
