Setup:
14m x 12m area, 2 setups. 6 players in each setup.
2 Mini-goals at one end and a single mini-goal at the other.
3 players between the two mini-goals lined up behind each other.
3 players at the single mini-goal (one starts in front of the goal the other 2 player behind it).
Instructions:
The ball always starts from the defender (red team in diagram) and is passed to the attacker at the opposite end (blue team in diagram).
The attacker tries to score in the two mini-goals and the defender attempts to stop them after making the pass.
Once the attacker scores or defender wins the ball the two players swap ends.
If the defender wins the ball they have 5 seconds to score in the single mini-goal at the attackers end.
Player Tasks (information to give players when they are struggling to succeed):
Can you decide how you will beat the defender and which direction you will go before going 1v1?
Can you attack the opposite side of the defender that you want to go towards first to create space for yourself?
Can you attack the defender at speed to get them off balance?
Coaches cues (things to look for when your session isn't succeeding):
When a player is taking their touch to attack the defender is it going towards the defender? (meaning they have less time to beat the defender).
When a player is attacking the defender are they close enough to the ball to be able to change direction quickly.
Progressions:
Move the two mini-goals closer.
Swap the players from each grid over so they have an opportunity to face other players.

Skill Introduction (20 mins)
Setup:
A central diamond with 2m distance between each cone. Another cone 10m back from each inside cone (shown in diagram).
3 Player on each outside cone, the player at the front of each group has the ball.
Explanation:
Players work with the player opposite them eg. Players from group A and group B always being the exercise at the same time.
Players A and B both dribble towards the cones infront the of them then use deception and go through the gate on their right hand side.
Once players A and B dribble through their gates players C and D begin the same exercise from their sides.
Progressions:
Change the side the players dribble though so they use both feet.
Introduce new skills to get through the gates (step overs, ronaldo chops, maradonas etc.)
Key points:
Can you ensure that you are balanced and the ball is between your feet before attempting to use deception?
Can you attack (dribble towards) the gate you aren't going through before you change direction to better decieve the defender?
Can you dribble using your opposite foot before you go through the gate (eg. If you are going through the right gate, can you start by dribbling towards the left with your left foot then changing direction to your right).
Can you shift your body weight when changing you direction to better deceive the defender?
Can you get yourself low when using deception to shift your body weight quickly?
