Possession Drill
Set up
15 players in total - grouped into 3 teams of 5
30 x 20 pitch dimensions. 4 end zones.
Key Coaching Points
Theme of the drill is to encourage penetrating, positve forward passing
The team in possession have to try and pass into one of the two small coned off areas at the end of the grid.
Each square has a player who must recieve the ball and play to the opposite square.
The team who played the ball in to the square continues to be in possession of the ball and plays in the opposite direction.
The magic man/pivot 10 player in the middle plays for the team in possession. Ideally this player needs to be one of the central midfielders as his passing patterns will replicate what they do in a game.
Key Coaching Points
- Can we pass forward quickly into the end zones - least number of touches possible.
- Variation of passes.
- Once the ball enters the zone we must offer support quickly. Width and depth.
- Body shape to recieve the ball on the half turn to make it easier to pass forward. Soft feet touch into the path to enable to play quickly.
- Scanning to identify next pass.
- Triggers and intelligent fluid movement.
- Identify and exploit the overload.
- Focus on the 10 to be creative in possession and break the lines.
- Decision making for primary, secondary & territorial players.
- Can the team out of possession press as a unit and stop forward passes. Communication to agree a defensive strategy. (2,3,5,compact with 6 offering depth & 4 screening). Recovery runs into shape.
- If the team defending wins the ball they must have 3 passes before they can pass into the end zone.
