Game Situation

Objectives/Timings:
Game Phase of the session - using a 9v9 size field, the field is split into thirds. Players are coached in game like situations to recover into a defensive shape to prevent the in possession team opportunities to score.
Timings: 15-20 mins.

Organisation/Equipment:
-Pitch into thirds using flat cones.
-2x 9v9 goals.
-Players split (7v7) with 2 CB's, 4 Midfielders and 1x ST.

How?
-Coach starts with the ball. Ball is typically played into the mid third - players in possession look to play Striker into feet/space or release a through ball to a midfield runner - which allows the Midfielders to make deep runs to attack and score. Defensive team to recover (man for man) and regain possession. Game goes on naturally once one team breaks into the final third until the ball is dead.

Conditions/Challenges:
Conditions:
-New ball in means the players are locked into zones until the first entry into a final third.
-You may add a pass limit in the middle channel before going forward.

Challenges:
-Can players recognise how/where to recover in game situations - 'What's the biggest threat?'

Progressions:
-Coach can play balls into Strikers/CB's - player reaction to recover as needed.
-Allow the game to play open.

Variations:
-Game can be 2v2 in end zones / 3v3 central.

Coaching Points:
-Defensive recovery player to be aware of where they are needed to recover.
-Goal side runs - get inside of the opposition players to force away from goal.
-Recovery to Player, Space or the ball?
-Consistent communication between defensive players.
-Recovering players should start to read opposition intentions (What foot is dominant?, How can i best help my teammates?)
