Purpose of the session:
In the games so far this season, the defenders and defensive midfields have either not been getting out quick enough to stop shots, or have been doing so with poor technique resulting in the shots still going in. First 4 weeks of the season will be focussed on emergency defending and stopping shots on goal. Initially from central areas in weeks 1 and 2 before progressing to defending in wide areas where the focus will be on either stopping, or at least impacting the quality of the cross and then defending crosses if it does come in.

|
Technical Close down quickly, slow down before get there, distance from player, body shape side on, knees bent to be able to react, small steps to stop shots going through legs |
|
Tactical Relationship between the centre half and the goalkeeper, centre half to protect one side of the goal and keeper to cover the other side. This switching if the player cuts to the other side. |
|
Physical Willingness to close quickly, bravery to get body inbetween shots and goal |
|
Psychological Desire to stop the shot |
|
Social Communication from other players and goalkeeper to encourage the close down. Would love to see congratulating team mates for a fantastic block. |

Technical practice in the yellow areas with the primary and secondary players whilst the other players take part in a 4v4 coached by assistant.
Organisation:
Set up the 4v4 pitch from the edge of the 6 yard box on one side.
On the opposite side, split the primary players into 2 groups, one group will close down, defend and attempt to stop shots, the other group will attempt to score.
Coach plays the ball in from a position and at a pace that gives the defending player a reasonable chance of being able to get close enough as the ball travels.

Defender:
Fast, slow, get low
Small steps
Body shape
Protect the goal

Organisation:
Coaching the blue/white team. Set up in a 4-4-2 with a narrow back 4, 2 central midfielders and a centre forward that has dropped in to support.
Orange team are also playing 4-4-2, 2 strikers, 2 central midfielders and a centre back that players can recycle through and must hold their position, and restarts play.
Due to numbers of players expected at training, add additional bounce players in unchallenged wide areas, the home team can't go into these areas, but they represent the wingers of the opposition. By not allowing players into these wide areas, it brings out the topic of defending the central areas.
Primary Players:
Centre Backs and Midfield Pair
Secondary Players:
Full backs
Player selection:
Based on players expected, blue/white defending team
GK - Zach, Back 4 - Ethan, Tom, Jack, Michael. Midfield - Theo & Thomas. Striker - Riley
Orange attacking team
CB - Charlie. Midfielders - Evan and Arya. Strikers - Oliver and Harvey
Bounce players - Tyler, Alex, George, Jack Mc
Rotation - Rotate in the bounce players
Instructions:
Play starts with the orange CB. Orange's attempt to score in the main goal. If Blue/White win the ball then they should score in the mini goals, either direct or via their 9
Orange bounce players can't score direct.
Managing the opposition:
- If you can, get your shots away
- If you can't play forwards then recycle through the CB
- Use the bounce players to try to wall pass past your opponent

Picture 1:
Want to see that we are not reverting to a back 6 when defending deep, the midfielders must engage the midfielders, and the defenders worry about the attackers. If there is rotation between the orange team then the home team communicate who is picking up who.

Picture 2:
On off the Orange central midfielders has the ball
On the ball:
When one of the midfielders has the ball, defending midfielder should close down quickly and show outside to prevent either a shot, or a pass into the centre forward.
Around the ball:
Blue/White centre forward should screen the back pass to the orange CB.
Nearest CB should be far shoulder from the midfielder so that the striker doesn't get the opportunity to receive inside and get a shot away
Furthest CB should be near shoulder of their striker so that if a pass comes in, they are in a place to be able to intercept.
Away from the ball:
Fullbacks should be in a position to cover if the midfielder gets beat 1v1 or to stop crosses if the ball gets played out to one of the bounce players.
Goalkeeper positioning should be a straight line from the ball to the centre of the goal.

Picture 3:
One of the orange centre forwards has the ball
On the ball:
When one of the strikers has the ball, the nearest CB should stop the shot, technical detail that goes with that.
Around the ball:
Nearest fullback could offer support, but at the same time be ready to press if the ball goes out wide.
Other CB should be ball side shoulder of the other striker to be able to intercept if the ball is squared
Away from the ball:
Midfielders need to be picking up their respective midfielders to both prevent back passes, and if the orange midfielders make runs into the box, then they should track them.
