Specific Set Up

Coached Team - 3-5-2 - GK (1), CB's (2,5,6), CDM (4), CM (8&10)

Managed Team - 4-4-2 - Less the GK and 2 FBs

Coached team to hit the 2 mini goals, that represent their ST's to score a goal. Ball always starts with the coach and they will play into the CB's.

Tapering used to remove area of the pitch where FB's and Wingers would have been. Therefore, keeping the space game realistic

Block 1 - Defending the lines with wide play

Block 2 - Defending the lines with central play

Block 1

Block 1 - Defending the lines with wide play

Roles & Responsibilities

1 - Set between front post and middle of goal as ball looks to come in to deal with the cross. Starting position for drill - Has to be high to encourage the defensive line out, squeezing the lines.

2 - If ball on far side, look to pick up winger as they make run to the back post, if near side go to close the winger down but stay in the box.

5 - Shuffle over into space and pick up the near side ST.

6 - If ball on far side, look to pick up winger as they make run to the back post, if near side go to close the winger down but stay in the box.

4 - Drop into the back line and pick up the far side ST.

8 - Lock onto the far side CM.

10 - Lock onto the ball side CM, look to block passing lanes into him where possible.

Defensive Unit (2,5,6) - Be brave in how high we go, look to squeeze up to compact the distances and make it harder for lines to be broken.

What if - Winger gets to the by line rather than crossing from deep - GK position moves to front post, if in 6 yard box his ball. 2,4,5 - Get ready to deal with and make sure they are locked on. 8&10 - get to edge of the box to stay with runners and lock the box off. 6 - Recover back centrally.

Block 2

Block 2 - Defending the lines with central play

Roles & Responsibilities

1 - Start high to encourage the defensive line to squeeze up to compact the lines.

2 - Stay compact (width of the D), don't engage until ball is being played into the ST. Nearest CB's pick up at all times, free man if wide is ready to jump to wingers or watch for them rolling inside.

5 - Stay compact (width of the D), don't engage until ball is being played into the ST. Nearest CB's pick up at all times, free man if wide is ready to jump to wingers or watch for them rolling inside.

6 - Stay compact (width of the D), don't engage until ball is being played into the ST. Nearest CB's pick up at all times, free man if wide is ready to jump to wingers or watch for them rolling inside.

4 - Look to screen the ST's being nearer the ball side one, aim is to block passing lanes into them.

8 - If CM drifts into half space look to stay edge of the D width, with the aim of blocking passing lanes if they move the ball quickly. As ball travels look to jump out to press the CM

10 - If CM drifts into half space look to stay edge of the D width, with the aim of blocking passing lanes if they move the ball quickly. As ball travels look to jump out to press the CM

What if - CB drives and looks to break lines - Rotation between (4,8,10) - One of either 8 or 10 to jump and engage the CB. 4 to then jump forward and lock onto the free CM. 4 and the spare of 8 and 10 need to be conscious that they aren't too wide apart and are on different lines so that they cannot be split easily by the CB.

Block 1

Block 1 - Defending the lines in wide areas.

Roles & Responsibilities

1 - Start high to encourage the defensive line to squeeze up to compact the lines.

2 - As ball shifts wide look to jump out of the back 3 and provide cover to 7 in case they get beaten. Also then in a position to press if the LM cuts inside and goes central.

5 - Lock on to the near side ST.

6 - Lock on to the far side ST.

3 - Tuck into the box and look to lock onto the RM if he comes inside.

7 - Jump out to the LM and press as they receive the ball, look to show them line.

4 - Move outside of the D and now look to block passing lanes into the CM's.

8 - Lock onto CM.

10 - Lock onto CM.

Success here is the ball being played back to the CB's and not through the lines.

What if - Winger on the ball comes inside. 2 to jump and press if Winger comes inside and drives forward, 7 to make a recovery run. If he continues to drive inside rather than forward then 4 to jump and press, 2 then looks to block passing lane into the nearside ST.

Block 2

Block 2 - Defending the lines from the CB's

Building on the What if from Specific Practice. Managed CB to now look to carry the ball and combine with the midfielders to break lines.

Roles & Responsibilities

1 - Start high to encourage the defensive line to squeeze up to compact the lines.

2 - Narrow off width of the D to create a 3v2 against the ST, meaning that any combinations that are played we are more likely to stop the ball getting through the final line.

5 - Narrow off width of the D to create a 3v2 against the ST, meaning that any combinations that are played we are more likely to stop the ball getting through the final line.

6 - Narrow off width of the D to create a 3v2 against the ST, meaning that any combinations that are played we are more likely to stop the ball getting through the final line.

3 - Lock onto winger and be ready to come inside if they invert.

7 - Lock onto winger and be ready to come inside if they invert.

4 - Jump to pick up free CM when 8 or 10 go to press the CB.

8 - If CB side, jump and press. If far side stay locked to CM.

10 - If CB side, jump and press. If far side stay locked to CM.

What if - LM & RM roll inside - 3&7 just follow them inside as we still have the spare man. If they look to become bounce players around the CM's then look to block passing lanes into them whilst remaining goal side.
