Set up: Players are in pairs. Small combination with a shot on goal. The ball starts from either end on the diagonal. One pair go at a time, then join opposite cue. Central two players must be dynamic, checking in/out to receive and play. The pass must not touch any of the cones that make the central box, move into positions to avoid the cones.
Progressions - 2 touch, add def, 1 attacker can join to make 2v2.
Coaching points/Questions
- Pass quality, cushion the set pass, weight of pass into the runners' path.
- Movement in the central box, check out to make space to set the ball.
- Comms, don't pass without a call.
- 3rd man run, time the run, arrive at the ball, do not wait for it.
- Body shape, into the place you want to pass the ball.
Q - Why is the 3rd man running? A - anticipating the play, to attack at pace
Q - What is the importance of moving before receiving? A - to create a space between you and your marker.

Set Up - Multi goal game. Set up as a 5 person midfield with 1 ST, if available. Normal game rules apply. Game is designed to encourage off the ball runs. Multiple targets mean runs can be made as a dummy to create space in another area. A central goal is worth 3 points.
Coaching Points/Questions
- In possession, stay wide and make runs to move the opponent, not just to receive the ball/
- Out of possession, stay compact, follow the runners.
- Comms
- Decision making, when to make runs.
- Identify situations where you can create space for others.
Q - When/How do I know what runs to make? A - look at the situation, will your run make a defender follow you? if the defender does follow you, will that create space? If yes then make. the run, don't make the run if it won't affect the game.
Q - Do I make runs to receive a pass? A - Not always, sometimes its to help a teammate out by moving an opponent.
