Practice 1 (20 mins)

Organisation - Breaking Lines

Area - 1pitch - 40x30 area.

Players - 12

Description - the group will be split into two teams, once they are in the two team's they will be put into the area but at different sections of the area. The ball will be played into the white team and then they will pass the ball between the three in their area then when they see the chance to pass the ball through the reds section they will pass the ball to them and then once the other players on their team gain possession of the ball they will do the same.

The reds will try to attempt to stop the ball being played through their area. They will attempt to cut out the passing line they should stay tight when they are watching the white pass the ball so they can't exploit a gap or space to pass the ball through their area to the other players on their team. If they win possession of the ball they will then begin to do what the white team were doing.

Coaching Points - In Possession:

  • communicate when passing the ball.
  • be on the move to constantly show option for your team mates.
  • can you play split the opposition with your pass..
  • keep the opposition guessing, don't be predictable.
Coaching Points - Out of Possession:
  • stay tight when stoping the passes
  • communicate with each other to stop the passing line.
  • when cutting the passing line can you control the ball so you gain possession and not give the ball back to the opposition.

Progressions:
  • there will be a a player allowed to go into the white area but it has to be a player that is facing the opposition, meaning the red from the far end cant go into the white area to defend it has to be if the whites in area one have the ball the red in area two can go in and defend them, if the red's in area four have the ball only the whites in area 3 can go in and defend them. To begin with they are passive defenders meaning they cant tackle them they can only put pressure on them. If they aren't winning the ball then they can tackle them.
  • Adding onto the first progression, the team can now instead of playing through to break a line they can play their passes over the top to break a line as when breaking lines isn't just playing through it is also playing over.

Practice 2 (20 mins)

Organisation - Using The Spare Player

Area - 40x40, 4 orange cones, 6 red cones to mark the middle.

Players - 12

Description - Who ever start with the ball so if the blues start with the ball they are making 3 passes to begin with and then they will play the ball into the yellow player in the middle. The yellow who has been passed the ball will then pass the ball into the blue in the the pink area, and they will follow the pass to make it a 3v2 and then they will look to score.

If the defending team win possession of the ball they will the have to make 3 passes and then start the practice againl. The yellow that was in the area when attacking will then drop back into the middle area.

If the 3 passes are to easy then make it easier, as well as that add one player to be on the defensive team pressing with the team who is defending and the other yellow player to be the one that make a 3v2.

Take the passes away and make the session more game realistic.

Coaching Points:

  • communication when making the passes to ensure they know when the passes are ready to be played through.
  • can they move on and off the ball to create space.
  • can the defending team ensure they are closing the passing lanes to win possession.
  • look to use the yellow who is the player spare to make the passes and play the pass through to their player in the other area.
Progressions:
  • make the pitch smaller to ensure they are not taking to many touches of the ball.
  • take the middle section out and have the pitch full, this will then make the players think when attacking/defending where they need to be when they are in possession of the ball and out of possession of the ball.
Conditions:
  • can they play two touch passes when they are making the passes.
  • can they look to play a one two and then play the ball through the middle.
