Description

Each screen presents examples of small sided games and also how to look for space within small sided games to present in game scenarios. The session is also one that aims for players to relax and enjoy themselves rather than being constantly challenged. The games also maximise ball rolling time by the coach intervening one on one or to teams individually.

Learning Objectives

Technical Tactical

Screen 1 (10 mins)

Warm up: Stuck in the mud (10 Minutes)


Organisation:

- Area size: half pitch

- 12 participants.

- U12s. 

- Equipment: cones, bibs, footballs, nets. 

- The main aim of the session is to understand where the space is in a game scenario. 


Steps:

1. Begin with one person tagging. 

2. Players stand with their arms out straight and legs slightly apart. 

3. To free the players participants must run under their arms. 

4. Carry this on until everyone is tagged. Then change who the tagger is for the next round.


Progression: 

- Add more players who are taggers. 

- Reduce the area size. 

- Incorporate footballs; to free players participants must meg them. 

- Add different ways to free players. 


Regressions: 

- Increase the area size. 

- Only have one tagger. 

- Reduce the amount of players by splitting them into two teams in two different games.

- Decrease the tempo with the size of the area. 

- Have more than one tagger depending on your observation.


Challenges: 

- Last 'X' amount of minutes without being tagged. 

- Free 'X' amount of players. 

- Think about running into the space like you would in a game scenario.

Screen 2 (30 mins)

Football tennis tournament (30 minutes) 


Organisation: 

- Area size: half pitch. 

- 12 participants.

- U12s. 

- Equipment: footballs, cones, tennis nets. 


Steps: 

1. Split participants into four teams. 

2. Each team has a ball between two teams. 

3. Conditions: the ball can bounce once but more than once results in a point for the opposition. 


Progressions: 

- Make the area smaller. 

- Change the teams around. 

- No bounces allowed.

- All members of the team must touch the ball before kicking it over the net. 

- Limit the amount of touches participants can use. 

- Challenge players individually. 

- Add extra points for scoring with header or volley. 


Regressions. 

- Make the area larger. 

- Allow more bounces. 

- Don't limit touches. 

- Change the teams up. 


Interventions: 

- Stop the teams rather than the whole group. 

- Stop player one on one. 

- Stop the whole group to demonstrate tactics and techniques. 

Challenges:

-  Ask players to score with headers or volleys for 2 points. 

- Scoring with a normal kick is 1 point. 

- Being set up by another player is also an extra point.

Screen 3 (20 mins)

Small sided game (10 minutes) 

Organisation: 

- Area: half pitch. 

- 12 participants.

- U12s. 

- Equipment: cones, footballs, goals.  


Steps: 

1. Split the group into two separate teams. 

2. Allow the game run with a limit of 3 touches per player. 

3. Then incorporate progressions, regressions and challenges. 


Progressions: 

- Increase area size.

- Increase the goal size. 

- Limit the amount of touches. 

- Set player specific challenges. 


Regressions: 

- Increase pitch size.

- Change the teams. 

- Don't limit touches. 


Challenges: 

- Players to score 'X' amount of goals. 

- Defensively don't concede any goals.

- As a team make 'X' amount of passes before striking the ball on goal. 

Interventions: 

- Pull players aside one on one to give advice and challenges to the individual. 

- Stop whole group to explain to incorporate the understanding of looking for space. 

- Stop each team to help challenge them as a team.
