Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Block 2 - Week 7 - Shrek

Whole Session

Assistants to be alert at all times & encourage participation from all players

Coach to be energetic, fun & organised & to carry the theme of the session to keep players engaged

Session Setup 

Space to be big enough for all players to dribble around &  for the coach to control full group.

All players with a ball each throughout sessions

Session walkthrough

Bring players in & ask them if they all know who Shrek is & if you want to join Shrek on an adventure & be his little helper. 

Shrek needs help building a new house, so his little helpers need to search for a new swamp.

Coach to give each player a cone to carry at this point

Players dribble round the area searching for swamps

Little helper to ride the donkey - ball between knees & jump around

Coaching Points

Close control, small touches, head up for space, awareness of other players

When players have found their own space they will place cone down to help build the house

Toe taps = building the house

Penguin feet = painting the house

Ball roles = Cleaning the house

Little helpers to dribble around & take a look at other parts of the house which have been built then find way back to the part that they helped to build.

Lord Stinky Forquard has gotten wind of a house being built close to his castle & wants to destroy it.

Coach will now have a handful of bibs in their hands & try to throw them at the little helpers who dodge them

Bibs found on the floor become 'fireballs' little helpers to wrap ball in the bibs & kick at the coach to chase him away

Little helpers to travel to the castle to finally take down Lord Stinky Forquard

Shrek calls in his friend Dragon to help 

Players to dribble around the area with arms out wide like wings to simulate being on the dragon

Little helpers can be attacked at any point with bibs so need to dodge whilst on the dragon

Little helpers now break into the castle

Players have to dribble slowly, crawl & don't say anything so nobody knows they are there. Players need to dribble around all cones.

Finally Lord Stinky Forquard is spotted & little helpers use bibs to turn balls into fireballs to kick at the coach.

Little helpers & Shrek claim the castle & start to live there.

*Coach needs to be aware the session only works if the storyline is kept fun & engaging. Players will have lots of the touches of the ball without even realising it.

Players ready for games now, theme can be continued as now they aim to score goals in each castle (Nets)
