Practice Structure

Objective:  Players will successfully perform control to progress (play forward)

Space:  20x10 yards (adjust to skill of player)

Coaching Zone:  Buffer zone between grids to allow for ball storage and coaches to observe players.

Technical Practice - Control

Objective: Improve players' ability to receive a ball on the ground to continue play forward.

Set-up:

  • Space: 20x10
  • Stage 1
    • A's start with ball and dribble towards the middle at eachother
    • A's perform turn and pass ball back to B's
    • A's now open to receive (control) towards their left and receive return pass from B's
    • A's receive on far foot and pass ball to opposite end and follow pass.
    • B's receive pass and dribble forward to start next rep
  • Stage 2
    • A's start with ball and dribble towards the other A
    • A's perform feint (scissor left and dribble away with right) and pass to opposite B
    • Upon release of first pass - A's return to starting point to receive other ball on the far foot and play to the opposite end they received ball from. 
    • B's receive pass and start next rep

Mechanics:

  • On Toes (to be able to adjust body shape to allow for a control to progress)

  • Eye on the ball (scan in between looks at ball)

  • Get in line with the ball (side on to progress)

  • Decide and present surface toward the ball (focus on

  • Relax on impact


Interventions:

  • Natural stoppages - 30 secs rest

  • Coach demonstration prior to the start of each round

  • Cue individuals w positive and constructive feedback

Skill Practice - 2v2+2

Objective:  Improve player's ability to control ground passes to allow for forward play.

Set-up:

  • Space - 10x20 yards
  • Process:
    • Groups of 6 (2 Blue, 2 Red, 2 Yellow)
    • Blue v Red w Yellows as Neutral Targets
    • Stage 1: 10 passes = 1 goal
    • Stage 2: Play Target to Target = 1 goal
    • 3 Rounds x 2 minutes / 1 mine rest (Stage 1) - Switch Targets Every Round
    • 3 Rounds x 2 minutes  / 1 min rest (Stage 2) - Switch Targets Every Round

Mechanics:

  • See prior exercise for the mechanics of control.

Internventions:

  • Coach in natural stoppages -link prior exercise to this one.
  • Cue in flow individuals who show proper pre-execution behavior - good movement that allows good body alignment encouraging forward play.
